I'd like to get an M1a as a battle rifle and the Springfield Armory Scout Squad appeals to me because of overall size, wieght, and cost. (not particularly interested in a SCAR Heavy or AR-10 right now)
Here is a link to a picture of it on their website: Scout Squad rifle
I've already got a Yankee Hills Machine Phantom 7.62 suppressor (threaded 5/8 x 24), and would like to be able to use it on whatever .308 battle rifle I wind up getting.
My primary question here, to those who know more about this stuff than I, is as follows: is this scout squad a good choice for an m1a rifle to put said suppressor on?
I'm asking because I loosely grasp the concept that I don't get to just unsrew the flash hider and toss my suppressor onto exposed threads like on an armalite AR-10 for example, but rather, I need to take off the whole front sight base, put on a new front sight base with 5/8 x 24 threads, get a front sight post back on there correctly lined up, and find something to use for a thread protector when I'm not running suppressed.
So is there another factory m14 out there that doesnt take so many steps to put on a suppressor threaded 5/8 x 24, or not? Answers to that question and any other relevant advice is more than welcome. I don't get offended by baby-steps, barny-style here, because I dont have the first clue about gunsmithing, or M1A rifles, or suppressors for that matter. I just know that I've got a suppressor, and I'd like to have a silenced M1a while I'm at it.
Thanks in advance all.
