my dads looking for a gun safe. he said he wanted to look at sportsman steel safes this afternoon. i just googled them and read some pretty terrible stuff about them, seems there customer service is non existent. anyone ever done business with them? any better suggestions? he needs around a 40 gun safe. the one by sportsman steel he was looking at held like 12-28 long guns and a bunch of pistols.

Re: safe recommendations

Are the Cabelas Outfitter series gun safes by cannon any good? Or even cabelas safes in general. Seems like the prices are comparible. They received mixed reviews and seem like the metal on them is a little thin.

Re: safe recommendations

What ever you get,get it bigger than you think you will need.Get the best that you can afford, consider it as an investment.Heavy is good, fire proofing is good.Work the net for tips on buying a safe, theres lots of info.Theres lots of old threads on this site. Pete

Great safes, great people to deal with. </div></div>

I've read some good reviews about them form some owners... and they make some large safes.

Re: safe recommendations

+2 for the Amsec BF safes just remember when the manufacturers state that the safe holds 24 long guns it really means 12 guns with scopes or pistol grips.

Like the others said get the biggest bastard you can afford/fit through the door because before you know it it will get filled up. When I purchased mine I got the size larger than I thought I would need and now I am looking to get another safe

.

Also I recommend going to the distributor to check them out and haggle a bit. Ask about the total cost of shipping some guys charge for the step up to your door, using the lift on the back of the truck, etc. In the end I was able to get mine lower than the cost advertised on the internet with shipping included as well as pistol racks and dehumidifier.

Re: safe recommendations

ive read around a little bit and a lot of people are recommending amsec BF series. he wants a safe now to cram our guns in before we remodel the house here. he plans on putting a safe room in the shop at the ranch soon for most of our collection to stay in. ive recently read good stuff about sturdy too.

I got one twice as large as I needed.... Wish I had gotten one 4x as large as I needed back then. You will outgrow it!

Re: safe recommendations

I went with a Liberty. It was pricey, but the quality is top notch. I was lucky and a dealer was local. I bought it and they delivered it to my door....well the street actually. It sat there for about 2 hours until I could round up enough help to move the thing. It also broke the appliance dolly we were trying to use. Several beers later and a few hours, she was all sitting pretty in my house. Regardless of what you get, they weigh an ass load, but totally worth it.

I would certainly get the largest one you can afford and fit. We keep a lot more than guns in the safe. Its added peace of mind for sure.

Re: safe recommendations

looked at fort knox's today. he was really interested in their titan 7241 model. i believe its 10 gauge steel, like 60 min at 1680 degree fire rating, then a second layer of 10 gauge steel to line it. pretty pricey but hey you get what you pay for. damn thing was huge and heavy.

their legend series is stunning. its a 10 thousand dollar safe though so it ought to be.

I don`t like 10ga sheet metal for safes.

who uses thicker metal? plus this one has two layers, the inside one being SS. its got a trip wire around the locking mechanism so if someones trying to cut/chop in around the lock, they cut the wire and the safe cant be opened. its got ball bearings in the locking mechanism so it cant be drilled out.

Re: safe recommendations

Graffunder uses 1/4" (Bishop) = 3ga , 1/2" (Emperor) = 0000000ga, and 1" (Fortress) wall thickness (door is thicker of course).

Summit uses 1/4" (Everest), 3/16" (Denali) wall.

Just two manufacturers that I know of - I'm sure somebody in the field could provide more...

Sturdy safe, 5 gauge and 7 gauge </div></div>

Wow, I didn't know Sturdy used 5ga. Mine is 7ga. Do you have to ask for it special? I wish Terry told he had this option.

Re: safe recommendations

The shipping weight on my Ft Knox was 1960#.Take off 50-75# for the box and pallet, its still heavy, but not as much as some.I think the sides are 3/16 and the door is 3/4,with a 10ga stainless liner.Forget the dolley, you will need a pallet jack, and lots of beer. Also, the advertised capacitys are for m-94 winchesters, not scoped bolt guns.
I'm happy with my Ft Knox, but would look hard at Graffunder if I ever do it again. Pete

Re: safe recommendations

My vote goes to Liberty. They are extrememly well built and have and outstanding replacement warrenty.
You can look up dealers online. Usually some shop nearby will be pushing one model and the price will be much lower than website retail.
Also you might try Sam's Club, they get some really great loads of safes in at times which are by far the best bargain, Liberties included.

Re: safe recommendations

I've been impressed with Liberty. I like others have mentioned should have bought a bigger one, although at the time I think it was the biggest Liberty made. Bought it locally, delivery was free, dealer gave me a heck of a deal I thought, better than prices online. Great Replacement warranty from what I understand, not had to use them, and hopefully I want.

Re: safe recommendations

The sturdy safes look real good. Keep in mind that a fire is much more likely event than theft and the sturdy safe seems to have MUCH better fire protection than most of the others.

Re: safe recommendations

Thumbs for the Liberty. I agree with other posts, get bigger than you think you need, you will fill it a short amount of time. I will have to get another one soon. I have a friend who had a house fire, it burned to the ground, the only thing he saved were his guns and other documents he had in his Liberty safe. After his fire, I made my mind up and got the Liberty, I love it.

Re: safe recommendations

Some one has probably already said it, but a gun with a scope is like putting 2 guns in a safe, so account for the extra room when buying. I have a liberty, great investment.

Re: safe recommendations

Have two Liberty safes now the newest a Franklin Fatboy. Bought from Discount Gunsafes Inc. about 40 miles from me. Bset price and warranty. They delivered, placed, and moved my other one around for 100 bucks. All I had to do was fill it up. +1 Liberty

Re: safe recommendations

If you're going to look at Graffunder and AmSec, you might as well look at a Pendleton as well. They have them at McBride's, if you go to Ausin. You can store up to 30 long-guns, and they'll all be much more accessible than in a regular safe.
