Re: Safety First

Every time I see someone riding a bike in shorts, flip flops or no helmet I just want to pull up next to them and scream. The right gear saved my life when I crashed.

Re: Safety First

RUB's that always say,"Oh, that won't happen to me!"
Two kinds who ride as we all know. Those who been down, and those who will in the future. 30+ years on two wheels and I still don't count dirt dumps, but the 3 on the asphalt have been enough...to make me wear gloves, boots, leather and a helmet. Speed Kills? Maybe, sometimes, but man is it FUN!

I generally scream back "I'll decide" followed by running the red light we are sitting at and wheelying into oncoming traffic.

Although I wear gear a good portion of the time I am riding there is also much enjoyment to be had enjoying riding in the evening and feeling the temperature changes between stands of trees among many other bike oriented pleasures.

Re: Safety First

What, no comments on the big "SAFETY FIRST" on his back?

I'm an ATGATT kind of guy, ever since I road/drag/motocross raced years ago. Having learned through experience the difference between good gear, so-so gear, and no gear in a crash I tend to wear good gear. You want to ride without it, go ahead. Your choice.
What really bugs me is people riding without eye protection.

Re: Safety First

I ride a sport bike and Ive been down 3 times. All 3 times I walked away without a single scratch on me. Why? because I was wearing a $600 Arai helmet, $500 Alpinestars (Italian) jacket, $100 Alpinestars gloves, Fox knee and shin guards and $350 Sidi B2 riding boots.

My gear in all 3 occations was scraped to hell, and I had to spend another $1800 for new gear after each crash, but boy was it worth it!

Quality gear saves skin! I can replace the cows skin easily, my skin on the other hand.......

Re: Safety First

I understand completely, and in the summer I would usually ride in heavy jeans and work boots.I know it's the riders choice but while no gear would have saved my arm and leg,at least the helmet allowed keep my mind and my handsomeness.

Re: Safety First

I don't ride with full gear, mainly because of it's cost. If I go down and get tore up, I'll have to make up another war fishing story.

Re: Safety First

Gear protected me in the two "Scud Impersonations" that I was involved in. I ain't gots no road rash at all, but the list of broken bones just about outplays the list of unbroken ones.

Head on/side swipes are pretty much a given for injuries. And remember, when you've been launched off your scoot, the landing is all about the 'tuck and roll'.

The aftermath ain't fun, but its way funner than dying.

You do know that jeans are nearly equivalent to kleenex if you're sliding? Not picking on you, I do the same thing a lot, but I know I'm not protected. I bought a pair of Sliders from an inmate on ADVRider, feel ok but fit a little odd, so I'll try on a set of Draggin' Jeans too. Better than nothing, and I'm often too lazy to wear armored pants.

Re: Safety First

I once was taking care of a guy who slid his bike on the Firestone Test Track in West Texas. He was fully suited, and when the tires failed was skilled enough to slide rather than tumble. Essentially, he "Got off" the bike, when it became un-rideable. He fully ground down one or two pads on his elbows, knees, and left calf area, but only came in because his employer required it. He was doing over 90 MPH, slowing down from 120 MPH. Not a scratch.
Another who was dressed in Jean jacket, engineer boots, and levis, was torn to shreds. In fact the cheese grater mentioned above, seemed apropos.
Finally, a freak accident, when two fully armored BMW riders rode down a street that had been closed to pull TV cable, across the street, ran into the drooping cable, at 10 MPH. The cable brushed the top of his helmet, but caught her under the chin. Broke her neck.
My point, is armor will protect you in most cases. Denim is equal to kleenex, and sometimes no matter what you do, you are dead.
After the first year working an ambulance, I put a spatula on the hanging rack over the cot in the ambulance. When asked what it was for, I said it was to scrape the MC riders off the front of the 18 wheelers.
After 20 years of working emergency room, I call them Murder Cycles.

Re: Safety First

Had a brother go down on a metal bridge about 20 years ago.You know the ones that look like cheese graters! Leather jacket and pants, gloves with engineer boots. No lid.62 pan 18" over springer/ hardtail. At 60mph + trying to out run a storm. We did not!!I think the water helped a little but he lost an ear and half a cheek. He's all right now but the left is fucked. Rode home and used perxoid and mercurchrome and 100 proof !How the hell did we get this old?Still Ride the same Shovel FLH now Jacket, gloves, boots, chaps added a lid(it's the law) and avoid metal bridges in the rain.

Yeah I know.I have a bit of a different outlook now.I oddly enough had nearly no road rash after my accident. They did take skin grafts from my thighs and sides to close my right leg and that shit hurt! The only thing worse was the damn Vascath for dialysis while my kidneys recovered.I just hate to see kids on bikes with NO gear and no realization of how bad it can be.

Re: Safety First

I would think twice about draggin jeans, do you know what happens to kevlar lined jeans when dragged on asphalt? it gets hotter than hell and burns your skin off. A friend went down wearing a pair, low side crash so he slid quite a bit. Can you say 3rd degree burns? He had to get skin grafts on his right side.

Re: Safety First

I didn't know that, dammit. Now I've got to figure out which is worse, burns or no skin. Hobbes' choice, there.I've got armored pants (Cordura/EVO etc) but usually only wear them when it's cold out. They're hot and bulky.
I guess I'm in the market for better lower-body gear. Any suggestions?

Re: Safety First

Titanium chainmail suit. Great airflow. No heat build up do to heat disapation while skidding across asphalt. Lools like chrome.Use steel chainmail for nite crashes great spark show!!!
