I've never had that occur. The safety simply blocks the downward movement of the sear. The only real resistance should be from the safety detent ball. http://stevespages.com/ipb-remington-700.html Not sure why you're having to use excessive force to disengage the safety. Before using the rifle any further, take it to a competent gunsmith before you have a negligent discharge.

No, the safety doesn't engage the trigger itself. That's why once the safety is engaged, you can move the trigger through it's entire range of movement.

I would just replace the trigger. A Timney runs about $120 and Mark x pro take off around $45 on the hide. Who know what damage has been done, given it has been struck with a hammer. The money is well worth the peace of mind.

I'd agree with simply putting in a new trigger, it's very simple to do but the Remington trigger isn't too bad, it's just not great.
If you're half way mechanically inclined you can see if it's a smiple adjustment problem.
I'm sure the same thing is listed here but didn't have time to search.

As to safety issues, I don't use mine so it's a moot pooint with me. I simply only load it when I intend to pull the trigger. If for some reason I can't, the round comes out of the gun.

The safety lever might be bent inward,take the action out of the stock to see if it is rubbing or not.

I have 2 of the really old style triggers on 700s ..One is great but the other one is really sketchy like drop the firing pin when taking it off safe sketchy. It also does things like you mention like wont engage sometimes. I bought it off the used gun rack at a reputable shop for the receiver... The worst par is I didn't do any adjusting....makes you wonder..The 150$ or so it cost to replace inst worth an accident.

u r exactly right it is not worth the risk my with shoots this also and i am not going to take that chance going to replace the trigger and send the old one back to the gunsmith that built the gun and let him look it over. but for some reason it wont adjust very well, when i get the pull weight where i want it and no creep it will go off every so often but only if it is on safety and i pull the trig then push it to fire but not when jack the bolt
