Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

I have searched here, Google, other sites, etc. to try to answer my questions but details, even from the Sako/Beretta website seem to be elusive.

Essentially I am shopping for two Sako TRG rifles, one a 42 in .338 LM green stock, phosphate barrel and the other a TRG 22 in .308 Win with the dark earth barrel and phosphate barrel. My questions revolve around scope mounting options and also if anyone has a model number/product number for the TRG 22 in dark earth/phosphate. Euro-optics lists the both of the guns I am interested in and they show the .338 LM as JRSM235 but no number on the TRG 22 in .308. I am trying to get the number(s) so I can have my local guy quote me a price. I try to keep my money with my local people when I can. The problem is that most shops around me have no idea about any TRG models so I want to make sure I am quoted correctly and order correctly.

As far as scope mounting I am torn between whether I need/should get the rifle with the picatinny rail option or if I just need the standard rifle? My intent is to use a Richard Near base and rings. I may use other rings but definitely the Near base. So I'm trying to determine if the Near base mounts to the non-railed factory gun or of it is meant to go over the factory rail.

Sorry for all the questions but for over $5000 in rifles I want to make sure I order what I want/need and not get into a "returning the wrong gun" fiasco.

Not that anyone will care but the reason I am looking at them both is that I want to re-stock my Tikka T3 Tactical and by the time I do that for nearly the same money I can buy the TRG 22. I've been shopping for the TRG 42 for a few months, trying to decide on options, etc. and just did the math to find out that the TRG 22 would be economical if I sell the Tikka.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

All TRG's have a dovetail in the receiver weather or not you purchase one with the factory pic rail or not. The factory rail is removable and has no down angle built into it. In short the Near rail will work with any TRG, but if you do buy one with a factory rail you will first have to remove the factory one. All rails mount directly onto the top of the receiver and utilize the recoil stops machined into the top of the receiver. Hope this helps. If you have any questions about which model you want just call Alex at Europtic, he is a great guy.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

I can confirm the 338LM TRG42 Green stock/Phosphate barrel as JRSM235 as it's the same on my TRG42 factory box.

You can purchase the rifle alone and go with the Near pic base (which mounts straight to the TRG receiver) and his 3-ring alphamount OR his standard scope rings. If you want to keep it factory then SAKO has a 3-ring tactical mount that mounts straight to the TRG receiver and is also VERY solid.

I had the SAKO 3-ring mount 30mm on my 42 but have since sold it for the near 25MOA picatinny base and his 3-ring Alphamount for a new 34mm scope.

There is also the Sphur mount that is cool with a lot of features built in also but like the SAKO 3-ring mount it keeps your set-up "proprietary" in that the mount will only work for TRGs. The near Alphamount will work on ANY picatinny base.

Here's a link with a write up and pictures by jasonk of the Near Alphamount:

Here is a group buy with pictures of the Sphur mount:

Hope that helps.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

I had read that a few people had problems removing the factory rail, screws braking or something like that. I'm sure the Sako 3 ring mount is nice but at about $500 I think I'll go with the near as I have yet to hear a negative review from anyone on the Near.

For the Near, is the Alphamount the way to go or buy a base & rings? I guess the Alphamount would be better, and looks like cheaper than a base & rings. Still a pricey piece of kit but it seems like a lot prefer them over the Sako one and it's still $150 cheaper, enough for a brake

Another forum member here has a TRG 22 in dark earth that he will get Friday and has offered to PM me the product number. I would call Euro Optics and ask them but it doesn't seem fair for me to call them for a product ID so I can order it from someone else.

If I can save a few hundred bucks on the TRG by getting my local guy to get it I will but if it is near the price that Euro Optics has I will just deal with Euro as they have a great rep here. I have my eyes on a custom .338 LM that may be my purchase over the TRG 42 but I will be getting a TRG 22 regardless.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Just to give my thoughts on the base thing. First everyone is correct in that all TRGs have the factory dovetail so they will take Richards base. I highly recomend all of the Near products, if you are planning on using a break Richards is the best. These are just my opnions though.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

The Near alphamount will need to go on a pic rail too. It doesn't just bolt to the receiver. So you're looking at base/rings or base/alphamount.

I have a 45moa Near on my TRG-42 and it is top notch. Very glad I dropped the coin on Richard's products. Alphamount might come eventually, but my NF rings are working fine right now.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Considering a stock Sako TRG42 in 300 Win Mag -vs- a custom build 300 Win Mag (e.g. McM A-5 stock, Mike Rock barrel w/5R rifling, MachineDefiance Action). Purpose: Long Range Hunting and 1000+ target competition.

Would appreciate any f/b on SHOOTERS using a TRG42 in 300WM. Currently own a Sako 85 Grey Wolf (270WSM) and the action and performance are first-rate.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Amok,

I believe a guy who goes by the moniker "ChadTRG42" shoots a 42 in 300 win mag. You can try contacting him.

OP,

I shoot a TRG-22 with the NEAR 20 MOA base and badger rings. Never had any issues. It is still a stout setup, although the alphamount is an amazing piece.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Why considering sandwich solutions?
Why use more parts than necessary?

As the action have a perfectly machined base (that is absolutly the optimum for any scopemounting), why not use that instead of screwing a base to the top of it?

Regardsless if you choose Near Mount, the sako 3 ring mount (lowered price 360USD or something) or my Spuhr mount or any other mount I think it's really backwards thinking to attach a picatinny rail onto that action.

Picatinny rails are used when the action is missing a rail, not when you have a rail already.

In my opinin this is like buying a new car, and at the same time never drive it and just put it on the top of a trailer behind your old truck and drive around like that.

Not sure what you ment here.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

Have a TRG42 338 LM Green stock which came with both the 3 ring tactical and rail base along with several other accessories as was lightly used (I fired round number 4 and 5 before I got it).

Like the system, while the Sako rings/bases work fine, part of me does not like having the plastic inserts just in case they get messed up years in the future, but got the package at a price that could not be passed on.

Re: Sako TRG 22/42 Questions

I have a TRG22 with the Sako 3 ring mount. I have to support Spuhr, the Pic rail is superfluous, you are just adding another unnecessary part.

As for the plastic inserts in the Sako rings: they act like bearings to prevent any torgue on the scope tube, I cannot imagine how they could go bad, their made out of teflon, IIRC.

My advise: skip the PIC rail; Sako mounts are expensive, but you will not regret.

Under pressure some plastics can creep with time (years), but teflon should take care of most minor solvent issues.

Agree the PIC is extra unless you are mounting something different (i.e. night vision etc.), some day it needs to find a new home.

Thanks

I didn't, but I wish. What I meant was that I was wanting to re-stock my Tikka T3 Tactical in a Roedale Chassis, which runs near a grand. So with $1100 or so in the Tikka and then $1000 for the stock I would have about $2100 invested in the Tikka. So I figured I could get a TRG 22 for near that and as luck would have it I found one for about $2000.

Not to bore you with details but originally I wanted a TRG 42 in .338LM. Instead I got a custom Stiller Tac 338 which met my .338LM need but I still lusted for a Sako TRG. So now I have a .338LM but was still able to scratch the TRG itch with a nice TRG 22.

Don't worry, if I find any TRG rifles for a grand I'll be buying as many as possible.
