Suppressors Sandstorm mounting question?

Here's my situation. I have a Gemtech Sandstorm on order and, ATFE willing, it'll be here in about a month. I'm going to be mounting it on a Rem 700P in .308 with a stock 26" barrel. In its current state, the rifle averages .70 MOA groups at 200M (my zero range). If I thread the barrel at its current length i'm looking at a 56" rifle (46" rifle+ 8" silencer= long assed gun), and that's not much fun to carry over distance.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to shortening the barrel in order to reduce the length of the weapon, and the advantages vs. disadvantages of doing so? I know that i'll lose some muzzle velocity, but will it have an adverse effect on accuracy?

Re: Sandstorm mounting question?

It shouldn't effect accuracy, if done correctly. I am also cutting my rifle down from 26" to 18.5". For all I want to do, I really don't need to have a 26" barrel .308. I have other rifles that benefit more from a longer barrel and is designed to shoot further then the .308.

Shortening barrel - Parting tool.

Advantage - Barrel is shorter.

Disadvantage - Barrel is not as long.

Re: Sandstorm mounting question?

20" will work for you just fine.
I run an 18.5" barrel as well that has served me well out to 1000 yards. Really will matter what your load gets tailored to after the cut down and use of a can.

What twist are you guys running at 18.5"? my stock remington is 1/12.

Re: Sandstorm mounting question?

I chopped my Rem to 20" (1:12)it still does ok to about 1k. You have a little more elevation where you're at so you should be fine.

It's definitely handier with the can and the barrel chopped to 20" than when it was at 26".

It's really a matter of preference and what you intend to do with the rifle. I have a .260 and .338 LM that have a 26" and 27 1/8" barrels that will be run with a suppressor regularly. Yes they'll be long but it doesn't bother me.

Re: Sandstorm mounting question?

I'm leaning toward 20" or 22" at this point.

So far i have used it for target shooting and for harvesting coyotes in the mountains behind my house. If Nevada law allows, i'll be using the rifle for deer this season. I still need to check on hunting suppressed in nevada.

Re: Sandstorm mounting question?

My Rem 700 SPS Tactical came with a 20" barrel.
Just had to have it threaded, and the Sandstorm works very well.

I never get to see it since I use a TAB cover to deal with heat mirage.
