When I bought mt savage 10 bas the bolt assy screw was rough around the bolt head, looks like their wrench slipped a bit. I called up savage and they shipped me a replacement.

My ? is, when I try to remove the original bolt screw, this thing is realy tight. Do I need to just man up on it, or is there a better way. Also they told me to just tighten the new one up, but didn't give me tourqe specs, is there any?

Thanks

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

put the small end of the wrench in the head, where the long end is opposite and off set of the bolt handle, in a way that you can step on both in order to break it loose... does that make sense?...

just crank the new one down as tight as you can get it by hand w/ the wrench

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

Just man up it will break free no prob some are just tight. I use the bolt handle to hold the bolt in place while breaking it free. I would just hand tighten the new one, I would say no more than 20-25 lbft will do the trick.

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

I take the bolt out of the rifle, and put the allen wrench in just a little to the right of the bolt handle when looking at it from the back (handle at 12:00, allen wrench at 1 or 2). Set the bolt on the bench or the floor with the allen wrench up off the bench, and give it a solid wack with the palm of the hand, (some people step on them). I have never had one not come loose doing it this way. Plus, you don't need any vises or anything else accept for the allen wrench. Don't know on the actual tourqe specs, but I tighten it by putting the allen wrench in and squeeze the bolt handle and allen wrench together.

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

Just got it off and back on, it may just be me worrying, but it seems like it feels pretty heavy when I close the bolt to the fire position. Its definatly harder to close than my model 12 vlp. It may have always been like that but is there something I could have done to make this like this. I may be just be paranoid, but im very picky when it comes to mt firearms.

Its not like super hard to close, it just feels heavier than before by a couple lbs. My model 12 is lighter by a pound or so as well.

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

here's where it gets complicated... if it's just a little longer than the one you took out, you're looking at increased spring pressure, it will be fine, but that's the difference between a good feeling Savage and a heavy bolt lift

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

Just a question, but if I took a bit of the screw off, without messing up the threads, would it lighten the bolt?
I will have to caliper the bolts first of course, but if there is a size difference, would this be a good idea?

Re: Savage 10 bolt assy screw?

I think I will start working out more, and just deal with the extra lbs, not doubting the brass and ballbearing, just not my style I guess.... thanks for the link though
