Savage 10, Case C.O.A.L. of 2.878

Hello all,

I nicked my crown last year and had it redone, but the gunsmith also re-headspaced my barrel because he had to take the barrel off and toss it in the lathe.
Anyways, I am going to reload some ammo this weekend and I wanted to see what the max COAL is with a 175smk. Well the case measured 2.9 to the lands.
So I setup the bullets to 2.878. They still fit in the mag, but I was unable to fire them and test accuracy. Is this too long? My case length is a tick over 2". I am also using 43.6 gr of Varget which I tested to be the most accurate with a COAL of 2.8.

Any help would be appreciated. Just seems really long to me.

If you're not jamming the lands unintentionally, the bullets aren't falling out of the case and they fit in your magazine, then they're not too long. It's kind of that simple.

Now...whether they shoot well, or not, we can't say. That's up to you to determine.

Start low and work up, checking that headspace is acceptable and not whacky after the recrown job.

Thanks Chris, hope to determine accuracy this weekend at 500 yards. Didn't know if almost .1 inch over spec is acceptable.

I run 2.860 and 45gr varget WIN BRASS 175SMK'S (caps lock off) bR2 primers. My node is from 44.6-45.2. It was much smaller when I was loading to 2.810. 2.870 to lands.

Deeper seated bullets yield higher pressures, so if you are seating progressively shallower pressures should be dropping--but if you are hitting the lands the pressure is going back up since the bullet isn't going to make that 'jump' to the lands.

Well, keeping powder the same, I found my loads are more accurate at 2.8 than at 2.87. 2.87 yielded groups near 1 1/2. Where at 2.8 they were touching.
