Is this model worth the extra $200 when compared to the Model 10 fcp HS Precision?

I have not had a chance to hold the stocks so I dont know which one would be a better fit for me. Any help would be appreciated since I am looking to purchase one of these 2 models.

Is it true that the Mcmillan model isnt even pillar bedded in this configuration?

Thanks

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

Ergonomic preference.

I have the fortune to be friends with someone who has waaay more gun funds than I do and he has both the HS stock and a few McM's, the McM's fit me better but others like the HS better. Find a way to get behind both and see which one you prefer. Good luck.

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

I have the McMillian and it has shoots sub-moa out of the box. I really like the HS model but the McMillian was the first one I had a chance to hold and I bought it. If its a Savage it will shoot, get which ever fits you best.

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

I currently have a Model 10 Precision Carbine and wanted to get something with more of a vertical grip.
I superimposed some pictures and it seems like there isnt much change from the PC to the HS Precision stock, but a significant change between the PC and McMillan. None of the shops in my area have these in stock so I have no way of knowing if the HS and the McMillan would feel significantly different.

If anyone has handled both, I would like to hear your opinion on which stock fits you the best and why.
Based on the pictures I'm leaning towards the McMillan based on what "I think" would feel better, but the extra $229 is hard to swallow simply based on pictures.

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

I have had a chance to handle both of them. I went with the HS precision for two reasons:

Cost (less $$ out of the box)
Full aluminum bedding block

That said, I will likely be skim bedding it anyways. It shoots .450 out of the box with handloads, when I am up to shooting. 95% of the time it is easily under an inch, 85% is under 3/4".

It DOES NOT LIKE Black Hills 168 match ammo.

So if you had to do it all over again, you would go with the HS while (in my case) saving $229?

It's my understanding that they should both shoot pretty much the same (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so this is just a matter of comfort and slightly looks as well.

Do they have the same twist?

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

i wish i still had my savage with the mcmillan stock. i had it profesionally bedded and pillared diddnt get enough trigger time to be able to give a real good estimate of accuracy but chances are i will buy another one in the next year

I was asking the same questions you were before I bought my model 10FP.

As far as I know the only 2 B&C stocks out for savage are the duramaxx and the medalist. I dont like the duramaxx and I'm also not fond of the forend on the medalist.

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

look thru here and you will see several people have modified the
B&C for better fit. take down the palm swell, trim or round the forearm. also look at the specials on McMillans site. compare a factory savage in an A5 -vs- an FP or FCP and adding the A5 later

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

Choate also makes an aluminum bedded stock. I have one on my Savage/Stevens that I built a 7mm-08 on. I got it for the same reason you did and that was better vertical drop of the pistol grip. Mine does have a bit of a palm swell, which I like. You indicate that doesn't feel so good to you. See if you can check one of them out.

I have the Choate Tac stock as well and have had very good results with it so far. YMMV

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

I have the Mcmillan model. I am 6'3" tall and have 37" sleeve length. The 10fcp Mcmillan is the first rifle that I've ever had that "fit" me. When I put it to mu shoulder my cheek weld is right on and I am looking through the scope. The length of pull is about right. This is a personal fit issue, but if you are a big guy the Mcmillan might be worth looking into.

I would go with the McMillian again, it fits me very well and shoots great. It is a matter of personal preference though, the rifle will perform in either stock.

One thing that is REALLY hard to get in a composite stock is a good fit. That you got that is awesome. One can always get by, and even do well, with a stock that doesn't fit. But man, when you get one that does it's like night and day difference. You don't spend the last minute behind the rifle fighting it to go exactly where you want it to. It doesn't want to roll on you. Holding the pistol grip by hanging your hand on it doesn't make it want to move.

A wood stock you can cut down or glue on to it (then cut down). But most mail-order composites are styrofoam or filament filled and you can only do so much cutting down. I like the Choate in that they start with a short buttstock and you can add a combination of pads to get the right length. I don't know about B&C or McM. I did try an HS Precision stock .308 on clearance at Cabelas's two years ago and I was going to snap that thing up. Came back to the store and it was gone. D'OH! What was I thinking?

Re: Savage 10 fcp McMillan

Thanks everyone for your replies, I ended up buying a 10 FCP HS Precision today.
After speaking with a couple different dealers I was convinced that the HS was the better buy. Not to mention that I practically stole a brand new rifle at the price I got it for, based on what I've seen them going for.

Nice rifle! I think they are one of the best buys! Have fun shooting the hell out of it.
