A friend of mine was asking about differences in the 10FP and Precision Carbine. He is interested in purchasing one of these two rifles. He mentioned not purchasing a 700 because it was more expensive. I did do a search here but had a difficult time sorting through the results.

The main differences that I see are the barrel length at 20 on the carbine and it comes with the accustock. The 10FP is a 24" barrel and standard stock. He is definitely leaning toward the 20" barrel version.

If anyone has a link to a review or comparison of these two rifles, let me know. I looked but didn't come across that info.

My friend is looking mostly at the precision carbine in lieu of a Rem 700. Does anyone with experience with both have a preference between the precision carbine, 10FP and the SPS or another Rem model 700 with 20" barrel?

Sorry for the long post. I'm sure that these questions have came up before. If there is a thread, please point me in that direction. Just trying to help out a friend with a rifle decision.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

This is the link to the savage website. the Law Enforcement series is where to find your information. Basically you are correct though, it's just a different length barrel and different stock Savage Link

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

and the pc has a cocking indicator and the mag release on the trigger guard doesnt it? not major in either case, just have to attack the bolt lift in a different way and the aftermarket bottom metal becomes an issue too i think. cant swear to that as i havent handled a 10pc to see first hand, but i recall both things being different from reading others posts.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I have a 10FP in 20", it is one of the best rifles I own. They are basically the same, except the stock has a detachable mag and the Carbine has aluminum bedding instead of pillar.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

While I am a fan of neither the .308 nor shorter barrels, LL has repeatedly demonstrated that my own dislikes do not preclude the reality of a good shorter barreled .308.

Comparing the 10FP and 10PC, I would buy the 10PC in a hearbeat. The Accue-Stock has proven, in my own hands, to be a major accuracy improvement over Savage's prior production stocks. I don't think there is a better standard factory stock on the market. HSP and McMillan are not included within my comparison. I consider them to be aftermarket stocks despite their appearance within the Savage factory product line, and outstanding values on those factory rifles.

I'd probably get the 10PC, unless you are planning to replace the factory stock on the 10FP. Either way, you can't go wrong with a Savage. They just plain shoot!!

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I figure if you want a longer barrel on the 10PC, it's a simple matter to order an aftemarket barrel with the Savage Varmint Taper. I just wish the 10PC was available on a long action.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

If he wants the long barrel, but wants the accustock, forget the 10FP and go with the 10 FCP-K its a 24 inch barrel and has an accustock, plus fluting and a muzzle break. Unless for some reason the last2 are deal breakers.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

Thanks, everyone. The accustock is a big plus for the additional money. That and the shorter barrel (which he wants) has him leaning toward the 10PC. I told him the accustock was probably well worth the difference.

How does the 10PC compare with the 20" Rem 700 SPS? I don't care for the tupperware SPS stocks. Had a 243 SPS last year. That factor SPS stock does nothing good for accuracy (at least for me). My thoughts were that the 10PC was a better deal for him than buying the 700 SPS and replacing the stock. My experience is that the savages are shooters out of the box.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I think you are best off going with the 10PC over the Remmy. For all the reasons that you've stated. I can sleep very comfortably knowing I have a Savage because I know it will be a shooter no matter what. Plus you get a better stock that won't need changing.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I think that's the main thing, being able to suggest something to him that I know he will be happy with without having to "upgrade" anything. The Remmy stocks I've had before were very sensitive to location of a front rest or sandbags. I shot good to very good groups with it, but they would "walk" depending on where the front rest was placed under the forearm. And forget about a bipod.

I see the 10PC as a good buy, since it has a good decent stock to start with, and should be good enough of a shooter out of the box without any mods.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I would agree about the 10FCP-K, except for the -K...; and the FCP-K was not part of the OP. The brake is unnecessary, IMHO; and not competition-friendly in a lot of venues.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

One last point, my personal belief is the only Remmy apples to apples comparison with the 10PC is the 700 sps aac-sd. As it is one of few remmys with the 1:10 twist.

Oh, will have to add, I was in the similar boat and went with the savage 10pc. Would tell you its great but havn't got to shoot it yet... Im waiting on some warranty work on my glass.

Re: Savage 10 FP or Precision Carbine

I have a M10PC (.223) and am VERY happy with it.
You may or may not make 1K accuratly with a short barrel .308. MOA of ROCK, sure. "hitting stuff", yep. Real accuracy? Who knows

Some will, some won't with out stupid loads.
If you fit a decent custom barrel then you are more likely to.

Funny enough, it looks like my .223 IS going to be able to make 1K with 80 amax's. Unusual, lucky but nice. I knew going into it that it was not likely and have another .223 for 1K but I'm happy I was one of the lucky ones
