Ok so this is my first post. I am looking at buying a new Savage 10FP-SR rifle this weekend. Its going to be my first heavy barrel bolt to start out with. The only thing is that I would like to have one with a detachable box mag. I was planning on ordering a new stock or as some say chassis for it as soon as I pick it up. Really like the looks of the XLR evolution

. So my question is this, will the barrel and action fit into a chassis that accepts detachable box mags and work with the DBM or are the actions different? Any info would be very helpful, I have been looking for a few days now and have found nothing.

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

The actions would be the same. What makes a dbm savage is the bottom metal and the stock.

I'm sorry but I've got to ask, why don't you just buy a Savage with the DBM and accustock? It seems a little unproductive to buy a one with out and then buy all the parts aftermarket. It will definitely cost you more in the end.

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

Have to agree...you could buy a 10FCP with the HS Precision stock and be even better off. Shoot it, if you like it, then go for the $800-$1,000 stock upgrade.

Hey thanks for the reply, The main reason I was planning on going with the 10FP-SR was the price, Buds has them for $585. Thats about $200 cheaper then the stores around me,(middle TN) Was thinking about taking the wife on alittle road trip this weekend;). Really just didnt know what all I would need to make it work, I have many rifles with the hinged floorplate but no experience with a bolt gun with dbm

Your wanting to save $200 just to spend $800 later...Buy the HS model or another comparable one. I saw a guy earlier talking about Cabelas having a model 10 on special with a ChoateTactical and DBM AND 26" barrel. All for like $650. Just have it shipped to your ffl and your gtg for under $700. Once you factor in a scope and ammo, the small savings on the rifle just isn't worth it. Plus the factory stock SUCKS so you won't get much good use from it until you buy a good stock. Just isn't worth the savings.

+100000 for the HS or the Cabelas special or similar

ratpimp, lol

if you want to go xlr, just buy the cheapest 4.40 action you can. the xlr dbm is different than the savage dbm and mags dont interchange. you can sell off the stock unless its cheaperware. buy a barreled action from jim at northland and i bet he can thread it and make a protector. here is the thing. you can decide what you want and buy parts and build it yourself. or you can buy a rifle and shoot it til you can buy the rest of the stuff to make that what you want. just depends on you and what you want to do and how long you want it to take

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

I am in the process of a Savage build that I bought from here on the hide. You really want to avoid buying something just to change it out later. I think someone make the point earlier, buy a HS precision or something and just shoot the hell out of it. If your looking to buy on buds, pick up one of thier Savage 10's with the 5r barrel. It has the dbm, accustock, and threaded barrel. I have one and I love it. It cost me like 7 and change.

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

Thanks everyone for all the great info, Its always nice to sometimes see things thru someone else's eyes. The direction I was going would have been a waste of some much need cash. I really like the looks of that model 10 with the 5R barrel,I have also found several good reviews on it here on the hide and some other web sites.

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

I'm a newb so don't know much either.
I too want to get the 10 FP SR and put it in the XLR stock. I like the threaded barrel so I can put on a compensator and I really like the stock design of the XLR. One disadvantage I have is I have never put my hands on their stock and don't know where I could.
I know you can get the 10 FCP McMillan or HS and shoot that and upgrade later but I see the XLR and know I like what I see. I by no means have deep pockets just wanting to get what I see.
Seems cheaper to go that route if I know what I want.
Input appreciated.

Re: Savage 10FP-SR rifle question

if you are going to change out stocks, then buy the cheapest 10fp or 10fcp you can. you can get a barrel threaded for 50-75 and boom, you have a 10fcp-sr. and if you really want to save money, get a stevens and sell everything but the action, buy a barrel, buy your stock and there you go. or buy a HS or A5 stock from savage with a 10fcp in it and you are done. i chose savage cause i knew it was a good brand and shot well. it was made easier after i looked and remy had no nice stocks from the factory. i didnt know id be able to find everything used here easily, so i bought the 10fcp-hs as i didnt like the A5 look. i would have paid whatever for an A4 as thats the way i think a rifle stock should look. but there are alot of ways to get what you want. you can get a barrel threaded so dont let that be your limiting factor. you can get any stock and sell it and not take too much of a loss.

first and foremost. have a plan. know what you want in the end. you dont build a house and just start with no plan or start changing this and that all the way along the project. i mean i know there are people that do that kind of thing, but if you do that with a smith and he will put you on the back burner pretty quick id bet.

but you can ask me andd shay and countless others. you end up buying this and that and selling it all off here cause you changed your mind again and again. figure out exactly what you want and build that or you will never be happy. i like my HS. i have textured it, skim bedded it, gonna paint it. but its still not an A4 so i know i will at some time buy a fully decked out A4 and either build another or get it for a 700 or FN/Winny action. i just gotta have an A4
