Building a Savage 17hmr trainer.

Going to start with a Savage 93r17tr
egw one piece base
burris xteme tactical 30mm rings
Vortex 6.5-20x44 Viper 30mm scope
harris 6-9in bipod

what height rings will i need? the tr has the heavy barrel.

the rifle is going to be shot from 100 to 300yards, paper puncher almost exclusively. would anyone do anything differently?

I'm not sure if a 17HMR would be the best choice for 300 yard shots. Its a 17 grain bullet, with any kind of cross wind its possible that you may never hit the target. Just something to think about.

Sounds like a solid start. Don't forget to upgrade the bottom metal with either a DIP or savagegunsmithing thicker metal piece. When you start playing with tightening the action screws the stock one will just start bending and damage your stock.

Yep that is the one. Most find the stock one will start to bend at around 15 in/lb's on the action screw. Some have found there gun needs the action screws tightened to 25 in/lbs. So for those people there is no choice they have to upgrade because the stock one bends to much and can crack the wood around the bolt.

Re: Savage 17hmr build critique

if shooting from the bench most of the time, i'd stick with the 6-9" pod, but if prone is going to be the most used position, i'd go with the 9-13" range, the harris is a good choice.

i prefer the DIP base to the EGW for a few reasons - better mounting screw, 5 MOA more of a slope, and a cut out in the base that gives better access and vision to the chamber. but the EGW is better than none.

as the base acts like a spacer, you should be GTG with medium height, and possibly sqweek by with low height, that will be close. high rings will probably be too high.
