Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

Hi all,

New guy here with a question for the experienced rifle owners out there (which is most of you I'm sure). I'm also new to rifles and just recently aquired a Savage Arms 10FCP HS.

My question is regarding the stiffness of the bolt action. It seems very stiff on the rifle and takes a bit of effort to move the bolt handle up and down when cycling the action. Are new Savage's typically like this? I don't really have anything to compare it to. Maybe the springs are just stiff on a new gun or maybe there is an issue with the bolt and it needs to be taken apart??? It just seems that while maintaining cheek weld it would be quite hard to manipulate the bolt without moving the rifle around. Should it be easy to cycle the action?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

PS
I don't know if this is related but the bolt was stuck in decocked position when I received the gun (it was shipped to me) which was very difficult to undo. I managed to muscle it back into cocked position so it could finally be inserted into the rifle.

Re: Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

Same issue with mine. Think it needs some breakin cycling. Also there is a bolt lift mod that would help.

Bunch of good info on getting the most out of your Savage over at savageshooters.com. You need to be a paid member to see all the info but still a lot of good for free.

Re: Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

Thanks for the reply. According to Savageshooters forum you can send the rifle into Sharp Shooter Supply and they do a true and time job on it that remedies this issue for good. I think there is a long waiting list to do so though.....

Re: Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

I've had several new Savages and all of them have been that way. It does get better after it gets broke in. I just recently saw that Sharp Shooter Supply offers the timing and truing. I think that I saw that it was only like 125 bucks so I think it would be well worth it!

Re: Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

If it's the older style bolt w/o the firing pin indicator, do the bolt lift mod thats on savage shooters forum. Order a longer bolt handle from Sharp Shooter Supply or Stockade. Also, put a little gun oil on the bolt and cycle it a couple hundred times.

Re: Savage Bolt Action Issue Question

Unfortunately mine is the newer model so I will most likely have to send it off to Sharp Shooter Supply. I'm just hoping the waiting list isn't too long....
