Is SSS the only place to get a magazine (or extention) for more than the stock 4 rd ?

if you're going to stay with the stock DBM then I believe SSS is your only option.

Vbull and CDiprecision offer bottom metal that accepts AI mags. I run the CDi bottom metal myself.

id like to switch out the entire dbm setup, but until i can kick the extra money out i was hoping for just the mags

I like the CDI. Great value, nice meaty metal and AI mags to boot, ~280 bucks with a mag, but still will save you about 200 or a little more over the Badger.

other than aestetics and relocating the release, is there a functional advantage over the stock dbm ?

Quality mags?
Heatshrink is not reliable for "tactical".
