Anybody have experience with tha Savage F Class rifles? I contacted their custom shop to see if they could chamber it in 260 Rem. It is possible. Just wanted to see if anyone had any input they could provide on the rifles accuracy, quality, and performance at long ranges. I think this would be a cheap way to get into 600-1000 yard shooting.

If you look through youtube you'll see several videos of Team Savage shooting them. The reviews that I've read on a number of different forums has been exceptional, easily competitive with full custom actions.

The Savage 12FTR is truly amazing for a stock gun. It has the capability to win major matches at a fraction of the cost of my competition rig. Accuracy is impressive. The Savage boys like the Berger 155 VLD and 155.5 BT in that rifle. At the F-Class World Championship, Stan Pate took third in FTR with a stock Savage. I've seen several of the Open guns on the line, but I have little experience with them. You will need to set the Accutrigger just a little heavier than its lightest setting initially or else it will go to a half cock when you close the bolt. This usually works out after about 150-200 shots and then you lighten the trigger as desired.

these are great rifles for the price they can't be touched by any other factory rifle. plus they are built specifically for the f class or ftr. go for it you won't regret it. just be prepared they are very long and heavy, great for prone not so great for other positions, but hell you can always have the barrel cut down.

Have your barrel borescoped when you get the rifle before shooting it. These rifles have a not insignificant percentage coming out of the factory where the chamber is not cut straight with the bore. Look at the throat - if it has rifling on one side and not on the other (not supposed to be any rifling in the throat) then you know you get to do the customer service dance with Savage.

SOME models of Savage have a much higher rate of reported issues. These are one of them. It may well be the market that buys these models has the ability to realise there is a problem and access to forums.
I find it hard to understand what else it could be. Savage don't make these any worse then the other guns.
The CS at Savage tends to be first rate. If you do have an issue they will sort it out.

I have one in a 6MMBR, absolutely love it. Bought it a couple years ago and never had a regret. Here is a group I've posted on the site before, came across it while working up a load..I'd say it's a keeper....
Five shots @ 100yrds completely unmodified Savage F-Class. .330 hole with a .243 projectile.... you do the math.

The only criticism of Savage rifles is that their barrels aren't of match quality, so buy the rifle in any caliber and swap out the barrel for a premium prechambered barrel. That would give you two caliber choices.

I don't have a Savage, but I did hear on the line this weekend at Camp Lejeune that one shooter with a Savage has a small counter sink well around where the firing pin protrudes from the face of the bolt on two of his rifles. Anyone know if this is normal and what the function of this is?

Any sort of a "chamfer", or countersink, rebate, etc. around the firing pin hole would seem to me to be a bad thing. I have never seen it on any of the factory Savages I shoot. Do you know if it came that way from the factory?

He said it came from the factory that way. He called Savage and sent it back in and it came back the exact same way. He called and sent it back in again and the second time back it was flush. It sounded odd to me so I thought I might ask to see if it was supposed to be that way. I'll let him know that it was not a new "feature" from Savage. Thanks and see you in a few weeks at Sacramento!
