Well I have been reading tons and also doing plenty of topic searching but still have a couple questions for a future purchase. I only have one bolt action 22-250 and I'm looking to add something in the manner of 308, 260 or 6.5CM. I'm seriously looking at a 260 or 6.5Cm to be honest. I have several AR's with one being a Noveske barreled SPR but want a nice bolt action and I also reload (just getting ready to dabble in rifle, up until now pistol only). I was at Dick's tonight and handled one of the Savage Edge's and was let down by how flemsy the mag was and also the mag release/box in general. What peeks my interest is the LRP but was curious if it has the same bottom metal. I like the price point of the Savage LRP 6.5CM but don't want to buy one and have to replace the bottom metal, if I do that I might as well start with a Remmy SPS Varmint and build that way. I'm not sure of the costs of doing a truing/blueprinting/barrel addtion to a stock SPS. Also If I'm reloading is there a difference in which way I should go as 260 or 6.5CM as far as brass/bullet costs. I know there are alot of these post but have patience with a new guy, thanks.

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Don't know if this is any help, but I have recently picked up a Savage Mod 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor.
Picked up a spare magazine right from the company. $49.00 and tax.
Package says the magazine with fit the following 10FC/12FCV/11Lightweight/12LRP Part Number is 106235.
4 round short mag. bottom release, will fit 243 Win, 7mm-08REM, 6.5 CREEDMOOR, 260 REM, and 308 Win.
There are also several folks on this site who do bottom metal and extended mags for a Savage rifle. The search function is your friend.

bayou1535, pm z71rat here on the hide he makes what looks like a pretty solid mag out of the factory savage mags w/100% guarantee!he makes 10 and 15 rd ers i will be getting some very some!

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Is the mag release the same on the LRP as the cheaper models? Or if I bought a SPS what caliber would I have to by so the bolt would work with a 6.5CM or 260?

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

The Axis/Edge rifles do not share much if anything with the other savage rifles.
the LRP only comes in .243, .260 or 6.5cm.
Im not sure about the mag release as I have a savage with the hinged floor plate as im a lefty and it was that or blind mag.

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Well I have looked at the local box stores and all they have is the axis/edge so hopefully I run across a LRP somewhere. Just for thought, what cost is involved in changing out a barrell on SPS versus a LRP using the same barrell. I understand you can do the savages yourself but not sure of the Remmy's barrell change cost. Thanks

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Well I found a Stevens in 223 today clearanced for $250 so I bought it. Now I gotta decide a caliber, deciding between a 260 and 6.5.CM. Narrowing my choices of the manners also, lots of questions coming fellas.

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Luckily, you bought a Savage/Stevens, so you can replace the bolt head at a reasonable cost.
If you were buying as a start for a build, why didn't you buy one with the proper bolt face? 22-250, 243, 7-08, 308 ?

There is most likely a block attached to the bolt body for the shorter case of the .223, you will need to remove that also.

I highly recommend the Manners stocks, in just about every design they have. I personally prefer the MCS-T version myself. With the Manners, you can get into the factory Savage bottom metals really inexpensively, and I can get you into the high capacity magazines inexpensively as well compared to some of the other versions out there. Gimme a shout and we can discuss whatever way you wish to go with it!!

Ring, I reload pistol but will soon be starting rifle and to be honest I keep going back and forth. Maybe silly to some but I think about barrel life also. From what I've read 308 gets 5000+ and 260 or 6.5 gets 2500-3500. Just don't want to rebarrel in 2000-3000 rounds but thats why I picked the Savage.

Re: Savage magazine/future purchase advice

Called manners today and they are 14 weeks behind. Rock creek won't have any pre fits until May, could always get a barrel from Northland but haven't decided yet. I'd be happy to find a reasonable take off HS stock. Not really sold on the B&C stock, I could live with it but I have read several posts about them not being true a drop in. And to add more salt I missed the group buy on the CDI, maybe there's a sign in all this. Fortunately I have a 18" custom AR that I built with a Noveske barrell that I haven't shot yet.

Also thanks Zrat I will keep that in mind.
