Savage MK II and elevation travel problems

I cannot understand what is causing such limited elevation travel in the setup I have. Hopefully someone here can help me figure this out!

I have a Savage Mark II - TRR. I replaced the base with a EGW 20moa base. I mounted on it a Bushnell 4200 3-12x44 scope which has 80 moa of elevation travel. This is a mil-mil scope and I found that I only have 18.1 mils of elevation adjustment. I also used some no name 30mm rings from my collection of paraphernalia.

I took this setup out to the range yesterday. Set my zero at 50 yards. Shot out to 200 yards using wolf match target 40gr. At 100 yards my scope elevation setting was at 2.1 mils. So far so good. I calculated I should be at about 7.8 mils for 200 yards. But I ran out of elevation at 7.5 mils. In other words from my zero, I have 7.5 mils up and 10.4 mils down. What I dont understand is that, since I have a 20MOA base, shouldn't I have more up travel than down travel?

I guess the problems could be any of the components. It may be the cheap rings. I am replacing these with burris zees with inserts, which I just placed an order for.

Some other Savage owners have suggested that there could be some issues with the barrel. One person said "I think many savage barrels are pointed downwards from the reciever bore centerline because you are not the first person to report running out of elevation when you should not". Another said "My first Savage had a droopy barrel, it took 36 moa of "Up" with a 20 moa rail to zero at 50 yds. My new one zeros at 50 yards with a 20 moa rail with 23 moa of up, leaving me 27 moa of up so I can get to about 225 yds."

I am really hoping it is just a problem with the rings and not the rifle itself. Does anyone have any similar experiences with their Savages?

Re: Savage MK II and elevation travel problems

7.5 up and 10.4 down is 17.9 mils which is 61.5 moa. You said your scope is 80 moa. Where is the other 18.5 moa? Maybe it was lost in having the windage set too far to one side. Either way, try the insert rings with one ring to get windage closer to center and the other to add a little more elevation.

Re: Savage MK II and elevation travel problems

I don't know about the elevation problem but I had a mark ii tr that had the scope mounting holes off center. Which made my scope look wicked left. It was painfully noticable when standing over the top of the rifle. After 3 different sets of rings and 2 scopes at turners (none of which I paid for) they had to take it back for DM (defective merchandise).

Good point. You are right the windage setting once I had zeroed was about 2/3 of the way through the windage travel. If centered I do get the 23 or 24 mils of elevation travel I should be getting. I am hoping it is the cheapo rings (UTG for $10) that are out of whack, and not the base or even worse the rifle itself. Will know once I install the burris rings that are on their way to me.

Or just swap rings

Am I reading this right?

So you have 80 MOA in the scope. Which if optically centered will give you 40 MOA Adjustment up.

40 MOA + 20 MOA (base)= 60 MOA

And you said you have 61. So whats the problem. If I am totally off here please forgive me. Working graveyards.

Mine was like that to an extent and I had to get a pair of Millet rings that are windage adjustable. All is good now but I was considering sending the gun back.

61 total, not 61 adjustment up.
