savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

There really doesnt seem to be much discussion about this rifle???
Some think it is ridiculously ugly, and there seem to be mixed emotions about it - maybe that's why?
What I do know is they have to have sold at least a decent number of them by now so you'd think there'd be more reports but there aren't. I have only seen video and reviews from the SHOT show demo unit, and a less-than-favorable review of the 300wm version, done here by TOP PREDATOR.
Regarless, mine ships next week! and you can bet your arse I will post my feelings on it. Mine will be modified from stock from the beginning, though - I'm not a fan of the accustock so I will go with a traditional bedding. There have been talks of the included scope/acessory rail not only being a little over the top, but also poorly fit to the rifle, so will be removing it and installing an EGW 20MOA base. And I'm ditching the stock trigger in favor of a trigger that is more reliable at lighter pull weights. I have a SSS competition trigger that breaks crisp at 15 ounces so it will go on this rifle...

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Couple quick pics of MY NEW RIFLE!!!!!! ditched the overkill rail system in favor of an plain ol' EGW 20MOA rail. I think it looks a little less tacky, although the main reason for going this route was because the objective of the scope would hit the forerail with the low rings I wanted to use(I use this scope on three rifles).

The gun is just kinda thrown together right now. I have some pod claws coming from phoenix tactical and I want to do a bedding job on it and install a SSS comp trigger next week. But for this weekend I will shoot it as is...

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

So far so good...I have 40 rds down the tube and it's starting to come together. 3 rds, with 2 hits at 770 yards.
Then I picked it up (very heavy) and had 2 back to back hits off-hand standing at 200 yards.
Nothing scientific, but I like this gun!

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

I have had 4 savages in the past 6 months. All have been a lot of gun for the money. But one thing I noticed up until now is that you can see where they didn't focus a lot on the minute details. For example, the fluting on my two fcp-k's are not the prettiest - they look a little rough. But it doesn't affect how the rifle shoots.
On this rifle, however, it looks like every detail was paid close attention to...its hard to explain - it just looks like they spent more time on this rifle. I just hope it shoots as good as it looks!

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

I threw some loads together for the first firings of this rifle. Figured middle of the road charge of retumbo (90 grains ) would be a good start under the 300g bergers - wrong! I loaded hotter from there and it seems to have been the wrong direction to go. I saw no evidence of pressure on the brass until 94 grains, but had heavy bolt lift and had to tap the bolt handle with a mallet about 50% of the time from the first shot of 90 up to 93 grains, and every time with the 94 grains.
My advice is start at the very bottom of the load chart. Seems the chamber in this rifle is tight and builds pressure pretty quick.
Regardless, use a 300 grain bullet. Every report has shown that this rifle likes the heavier bullets.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

I have the 110 BA in 338 LM with standard factory options. We mounted a Barrett BORS on top of a Nightforce NXS 2256 and a Harris bipod underneath.

First time at the range shooting over a Caldwell front rest, we put a mixture of 56 Lapua 250 gr and 300 gr factory rounds up the pipe. At 300 yds, 5 - 300 gr rounds grouped at 1.024 in. The spread opened up a bit with the 250 gr rounds. Felt recoil was on par with my 308. The completed rifle weighs and even 20 pounds so that tames the recoil down a bit. We moved up to the metal silhouettes at 600 yards, used the BORS to adjust the scope for that range (actual 613 yds) and hit the ram 20 out of 20 shots. Now on to working up some hand loads to reduce the cost per round. I also have a Sako TRG-42 in 338 LM with a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 x 50 ER/T M1 scope with a BORS mounted that performed a little better grouping, 5 - 300 gr Lapua factory rounds in 1 in at 300 yards. The felt recoil of the TRG-42 (15 lbs total weight) was greater than the recoil of the 110 BA

Next we plan to head for the desert to find some 1000 plus yd locations on BLM land to really put both weapons through a real accuracy test.

Here is a pic of the 110 BA

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Sounds good! I will be working up loads next week, starting with US869 powder, hornady brass, and the 300 bergers. I don't expect this to be my best combo but it's a start. My biggest problem to overcome is still bolt extraction, so printing killer groups is not a concern yet. But that yours is is a confidence builder!

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

I also have this rifle. I am expecting my dies to arrive any day now and sow will be working up my own loads shortly. Looking forward to seeing what results you chaps come up with. I will be using retumbo, hornady brass and 300gr Lapua projectiles.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Good start. I will be trying the 300 lapuas as well if I can't get good 300yd groups with the bergers. You may want to body size the hornady brass right off the bat as it may help with brass extraction. So far, nearly every shot of hornady through mine has stuck in the chamber.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

If you guys are buying Scenars get them from powdervalleyinc.com they have by far the cheapest Lapua prices Ive seen anywhere. Only a few bucks more than the cheapest 300smk's and I think they are far superior arent they?

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

just one question. why buy this rifle and swap out the stock? its gotta be a big part of the price. to buy it and swap out the stock seems a lot more expensive than buying the action and building the gun. just curious

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

FYI- I saw a few times on these forums that 110ba owners have had a hard time finding a monopod which will properly mount to the Magpul PRS2 stock which is factory on the rifle. I found a solution today. The 10/32 threads on the bottom of the stock will nicely fit a sling swivel stud, which really doesn't do a whole lot until you buy the CTK Precision ultimate monopod, which happens to mount directly to the swivel stud. Hope this helps a few of you 338LPM lovers out there like me......

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

The Accu-Shot Monopod fits on the PRS perfectly. They make one that goes on the rail on the botton of the stock. I am just pointing this out, as alot of people only think they make the one that attaches via the sling swivel stud.

Holy good prices! Thanks for the tip!!

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Correct, the Accu shot monopod works perfectly on the PRS stock, however the Savage 110BA comes with a PRS2 stock. There is no picitanny rail on the bottom, only 10/32 threads which will accept a swivel stud. So to attach a monopod to the PRS2 you need to utilize these threads. The CTK Precision monopod attaches to the swivel stud rather than picitanny rail making it the best solution for Savage 110 BA owners.

Ive seen several posts from 110 BA owners showing pics of their rifles, but none have ever had a monopod mounted. Hopefully this solution will change that.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

I bought the rifle a while back and haven't done much to it. I took off the palm rest and put a Sierra Precision pistol grip on it. It's a lower profile grip and works better with the Bench Rest Swivel bi-pod from Harris. I put a Nightforce 3.5x15 scope on it.

I haven't shot it much yet, my longest shot is 400 yrds so far but I will soon go out to 1000 + soon to see what it will do. The muzzle brake is very effective and reduces recoil down to about the 7mm08 range and is very pleasant to shoot. True, it may not be pretty, but it seems to be a lot of bang for the buck.

I loaded two different powders and bullets. I've tried the Hornady Match bullets in 250gr as well as the Sierra Matchking. I'm using either the IMR 4350 or the H4831SC. Both produce about 2900fps at the muzzle and cloverleaf at 100 yrds. Sierra's suggested accuracy load was a max load and I didn't feel good at that level. The same 2900 fps in either the IMR 4350 or the H4831SC and is well below a max load. The loads I'm using are for the 250gr bullet. IMR 4350, 83.0gr.... H4831SC, 86.3gr.

The rifle I got had the adjustment on the Accu-trigger that was as good as the custom built .308 I have. Except for the pistol grip, I really don't feel like changing anything else. While it doesn't say so, the scope I put on the Savage came off of a rifle with a 20moa base on it and I didn't have to change the elevation much at all.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the rifle and I'm looking forward to taking it out to a grand or more to see how it prints.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Just mounted that CTK Precision monopod to my 110BA, it looks good and works very well in theory. I plan to run 50-100 rounds through her this Friday. I will post to let you all know if this monopod is effective.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Roger, you may find that the 300gr pills shoot with better precision, I shot 250 and 300 back to back, and the 300's were consistently better. Given the tighter twist of the 110 barrel relative to other 338's, I wasn't too surprised, your mileage may vary though.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

Im running both 250 Grain and 300 Grain loads.

92.4 of VIN165 on the 250
78.2 of IMR4350 on the 300

COAL of 3.675, as I notice that when you seat to 3.680 it maxes out the chember length and sometimes fails to extract.

Both are Lapua BTHP bullets, Federal Primers, and Lapua Brass. I bought 1000 once fired cases from the Army testing facilities in Utah, and they are working perfectly.

It seems to me that the 300 grain bullets perform better so far, which is to be expected with a 1:10 twist barrel. But I have yet to test the Hornady 285 grain bullets, my supplier has been out for weeks. This round won the Nationals in 2010 producing incredible groups at 1000 yards under very poor conditions.

The rifle fired beautifully with that CTK Precision monopod. I would suggest that for any 110BA owner. I was splitting 2" sport clays from 250 yards in TERRIBLE conditions last Friday. 10 degrees F., 15-25 mph winds from my 10 O'clock, and snowing. Poor visibility but easily hit all 50 targets with 1 shot. I do realize this is only a roughly .8 MOA shot, but with the conditions it was good performance in my opinion.

Re: savage model 110 ba 338 lapua

For clarity regarding attaching a monopod to this rifle, the same 10-32 threads on the PRS2 stock also will hold a rail on that stock. Once you have the rail, you can then install either the BT12 or BT13 Accu-Shot Monopod resulting in truly the best solution at a lower price!
