as some people know i want to get better into long range shooting and my rifle just wont cut it. This rifle will be used out too 800 yards. I currently own a browning a-bolt 300. wsm and love the caliber and the gun is the perfect little hunting rifle but not meant for long range. I also own a 7mm rem mag 700 BDL which also makes a great little hunting rifle with great potential to be a long range killer so i was thinking if i let the 300. wsm go i could pick up a savage model 12 VLP 300. wsm for a decent price and it should be good out too 800 yards. Most every gunsmith will work on savage and it also has great aftermarket parts and serious potential were browning does not. This rifle will be used as a long range hunter but mainly targets. What is everyones thoughts on the model 12 VLP.

i was thinking of a Sendero 300. win mag as well but the barrel life on a wsm is better for targets. My other option was keep the wsm and use the 7mm as a base action for a custom and turn it into a win mag. But it will cost a decent amount more.

Re: savage model 12 for long range?

I have a model 12 but its on a transformation into a .260. If your going to build a 300wsm for long range on a savage action make sure you have a large shank action for that purpose.

i dont know what a large shank action is and why i would need/want it? i wouldn't be building a wsm on a savage action i would be buying the savage in a wsm and doing any necessary work or building a win mag on a 700 action.

look for an older bvss in 300wsm. It has the nutmeg laminate stock ans stainless action and fluted barrel. The only thing I did was swap the stock on mine and I added a brake. Great gun and very accurate. these were on the older 4.25" stagger feed spacing (bling mag) and will have plenty of stock options new and used. all of the factory wsm actions are based on the large shank, although I have seen some builds on small shanks without problems.
one on gb right now (not mine):

they have went up quite a bit since I bought mine. I gave 575 shipped for mine, but it has been a few years. Should be able to sell the stock and recoup some cash though. great rifles and a great cartridge, I just wasn't reloading at the time and didn't want to pay nearly $3 a round for good ammo back then.
good luck.
