So thinking of throwing a set of Weaver rings on there, which I know aren't great, but they will hopefully be decent for a hunting rifle. Are these an okay choice? So anyway, should I change the base too? Or are the bases that come with these rifles fine and it just the rings that need changing? </div></div>
I'd change out the bases too....The $19 Simmons, that Savage plops on there, may or may not be your cup of tea
I do have a Simmons 8 Point, that holds zero, and supprisingly pretty good glass
For a hunting rig, I'd go Leupold 1 piece base, and standard rings. </div></div>I really want a SWFA SS 5-20, but they don't make it yet. I've actually been using the Simmons for a while now. I have mixed feelings on it. Like you said the glass is better than I expected for the price. It's not at all good in low light, but that doesn't matter too much to me. I'm fairly happy with the glass and so far it's held zero great. I've been trying to tell myself to just keep this scope to get by until the SS comes out.
The thing that I don't like about it, is that I want to hunt with it and I've just read soo many posts online claiming they don't like Simmons as they as they have had ones in the past that failed and quit holding zero. This just scares me and I'm always worried that when I take mine hunting it's going to fail and me not know it and end up wounding or missing a deer. I'm not the easiest on scopes when hunting. I mean, I don't drop them, but I don't baby them either. They ride in the truck some just laying on the seat, or in a UTV to the tree stands. Stuff like that. I will say the previous owner also had this scope and he was a lot harder on it than me and it did hold up through him. I just can't get that worry out of my mind.
I also found a Nikon Prostaff I just bought, and I'm trying to decide if I want to mount that up. I'm thinking I minus well since I don't have another rifle to put it on right now and I figure it's got to be better than the Simmons. I figure if I'm doing it, I should do it right and get new rings even though my current ones haven't given me any issues.
That being said, since the Prostaff would also be temporary, I don't want to spend $50 in rings that I will have to replace when the SS comes out anyway.
So that being said, what do you guys think. Should I replace the Simmons with the Prostaff, or just keep the Simmons and the current rings it's in? Either way, I just want something until the higher powered SS comes out.
About the Leupold rings and base, I have them on another gun and while they are okay, I really am not crazy about them. I actually like the Weaver style rail better, plus they are a little more than I really want to spend.
