I'm thinking of putting a prone stock on my 12 Palma rifle (dont ask, I do not claim to be a reasonable person when it comes to rifle builds!)

Anywho, I was wondering if I should part out the factory palma stock and barrel, or if it be a better deal money-wise to sell the whole thing and just buy a target action? I saw where
Savage wanted $700 for this thing new, but I said I was unreasonable, not crazy. Just curious what one of these might go for on a F/S board in next to new shape. Thanks!

Re: Savage Palma Stock Value?

Well your post is bordering on trying to get around the 100 post rule here- that said:

I too have one. It is not a great stock for many reasons. It is too light, too small in the grip area, has an uncomfortable cheek piece (I flip mine around 180 degrees), and the snap-on assembly lets the cheek piece rock loose with moderate cheek pressure requiring tape to hold it in place.

That said, it is a pretty good improvement over the F-T/R variant of the Savage stock, so you might be able to sell it as-is to an F Class Savage shooter.

I have some mods queued up for mine to give it some offset as well as make the grip bigger.

The end analysis after you replace the stock and the barrel on one of these is you are better off starting with a Barnard action barreled up by a good smith and stocked in a real stock. The Savage is a false economy for a "real" Palma rifle. I can't stay in the rifle long enough to complete a string without my body screaming at me to stop what I'm doing. I'm hoping the stock mods will improve this.

Re: Savage Palma Stock Value?

Wasn't trying to skirt the rule, I didn't think about how that would look. Just looking on input so I have a decent idea when and if I do decide to get rid of it. Thanks

NOT FOR SALE! (better? lol)

I'd like to throw a Barnard in it, but I keep telling myself "You dont shoot enough to justify that" and "Your wallet will hate you" haha. I want to use a MasterClass Prone stock, and end up with an action that would let me shoot in NRA Any Sight/Rifle, F-class, and maybe a tactical match while still letting me keep the spending to a reasonable amount. I would like for it to be a reapeater, but thats likely to get the ax as I dont have any tactical matches close by that I know of and its just an extra expense.

Re: Savage Palma Stock Value?

Like I said, when you throw away the Savage stock and barrel, you are dollars ahead to just build on a Barnard.

The Barnard P/Mastin (or copy from Mac Tilton)/Krieger medium Palma 298/3065 with a 95 Palma or current USRIFLETEAMS chamber/Warner #2 rear sight w. Gehmann 510 aperture/Riles or Rightsight front sight - you won't be able to blame the equipment.

If you don't want to be Palma legal then build it in a 6 Dasher and be done with it.

Robertson makes some nice stocks too, and you can get them a timeframe described in months rather than years.

Re: Savage Palma Stock Value?

If you want the Barnard action and you want to shoot both F-Class and Prone with sling, then the only choice that I can see is Gary Eliseo's B1 stock for the Barnard. His new Bi-Pod that he has out for the stock is getting some good hands on reviews on the firing line. This is a choice I would take. And it will take you less time and less money in the long run than going with Alex's stock. Not knocking Alex nary one bit, he makes beautiful stocks, but the wait time and cost, if you were to call Gary, I would bet that you would get your stock from him a lil faster and that stock he makes has tons of adjustability. Just tell him that Froggy sent you to him if you choose to call him!
