Never built a Savage but might base my next project (300 blackout) on a Savage action. Unless I can find a 700 .223 action used for cheap. Trying to crunch numbers .
Thanks Scot

Re: Savage parts for custom build

Sorry, looking for an action and weighing the cost of bulldig a Savage vs a Rem, Like all projects this all started on a trade for a stock.which fits a Rem and will either be built or traded.

Re: Savage parts for custom build

I own several Savage rifles which I purchased or assembled myself.

The beauty of it is the the ability to change barrels by yourself with a few tools and some minor skill.

A tremendous amount of info can be picked at Savage Shooters.com. And the many vendors at this site can assist you in parts ( barrels, actions, etc...).
It can be a inexpensive way to assemble a good rifle at a reasonable price.

Check it out. It's worth the time.

Re: Savage parts for custom build

While ACE may have an argument, no doubt Remington 700 dominates the aftermarket parts category, I'd go with Savage. Jim Briggs at Northland Shooter Supply has Savage prefit barrels in many calibers. I've never asked about 300 Blackout, but its popular enough that I wouldn't be surprised if it were available. The Criterion barrels that he sells are phenomenal. Of course you know Criterion is owned and operated by Krieger. There are others like Shilen for a bit more, but I doubt you'd notice an accuracy difference. Headspacing a Savage is an extremely simple task...strip the bolt, close the bolt in the action, pop a headspace gauge in the barrel, screw it in until you get your desired headspace, and finally torque the barrel nut. I worried about accuracy, since a lot of custom smiths told me that the barrel nut was another "point to lose tolerance," however, when my barrel shoots raggedy one hole groups at 200 yards, I don't see how their services would have improved that at all. Only real issue is after market stocks. I obtained an LTV stock by watching the forums, but Choate has their tactical for budget minded buyers and if you don't mind the wait, McMillan or Manners produce stocks for Savage actions, so I don't see how its going to be much different from getting them to make a Rem700 stock...if you buy either one from them, you're going to wait 8 months to get it regardless. Bolt handles are easier to change on a Savage, again its easy DIY, with a common hex wrench and a replacement handle, you're set up with a tactical bolt knob and lever in seconds.

I'd choose Savage and not look back. YMMV.

Yep , you can only get aftermarket...
Barrels
Barrel nuts
recoil lugs
Stocks
triggers
scope mounts
bottom metal [including DBM's]
bolt heads
bolt handles

Someone needs to do a little homework! he-he

To the OP .... you will gain a lot of satisfaction in putting one together for yourself .
Go for it.....bet you can't do just one! HA!

Re: Savage parts for custom build

You can build a fine rifle on a Savage. I bought a used M110 300WM, put it in a McMillan stock, installed a match trigger and bedded it. I had no problem finding a 20MOA base. With the factory barrel it shoots about .5MOA and looks pretty cool too.

Re: Savage parts for custom build

Not sure if it's true or not but I have heard that the Savage is hit and miss in the 300 Whisper/ 300 Blackout in terms of feed and ejection?

I've tossed around doing one or the other with .223 Savage but I'm concerned about the feeding with the Savage. I have read (no experience) that the Howa and CZ 527 feed perfectly.

For a southpaw like myself, savage has been the way to go.Savage has been making LH production rifles since the mid 60's.Go to the auction sites and try to find a Rem Stainless action,or any Rem LH action no less ? I can buy a Savage LH Stainless weather warrior rifle for $400 + or - a few $$,a Stainless match barrel, accustock and your looking at an all Stainless LH match Quality rifle for under 1K.A "blue" rifle for around $600.Assembled(on your tailgate, workbench)in less than an hour's time.Lets see you do that with a Rem 700 ?
I like the word "salvage",cause I can always salvage a savage.
