So I'm really wanting to test savage prefit on my TL3. Currently I have only used Bartlein shouldered barrels for all my custom bolt guns.

I want to see how accuracy of prefits compares to my shouldered barrel setups. While I can just have multiple shouldered barrels spun up the cost is in the range of $700-$800 after you buy the blank and pay gunsmith fees..We already know how good these shouldered barrels shoot. I want to test how a $350-$450 Savage prefit with nut shoots compared to shouldered barrels almost twice the cost.

I am aware of McGowen, Criterion and Shillen. Are there Krieger, Bartlein, Benchmark, Rock, or any other Savage prefits available?

My first prefit will be a 223 to shoot 75 ELD-M's

One of the vendors on here (I can't recall who) was offering Savage-style pre-fits using some of the blanks you mentioned...

I know, I am a fount of useful and relevant information...

    Here ya go (Lothar-Walther)...

I've got a .260 that I bought back in 2002 (2003?) that carried me through several seasons of local 1000yd F Open. It's swapping off my Savage (Ghost Dancer) custom and onto a new Savage 11VT .308 target gun.

I run a Pac-nor Prefit on my .300 Win Mag LA Mausingfield, it is a stainless super match grade in a heavy Palma contour finished at 30" with muzzle threads, cost was $550 in 2015.

As for accuracy I can get the 225gr ELD-M at 2910 fps to group into 0.35 MOA and the 212gr ELD-X at 3000 fps to group around 0.25 MOA.

I had a Criterion 1:7 twist made up for my last Savage to shoot the 75gr and 77gr bullets, medium varmint contour, finished at 24".

For in stock pre-fits I go Criterion from Jim at NSS. I think you're right that they only stock 1:8 though.

Thanks. Looks like they only come in 8 twist 223rem

Yes, I see that. I thought they offered 1:7'. Maybe they did, and maybe they didn't sell well enough to be carrying them as an in-stock item. They do offer a 1:7" barrel blank in .224. One could probably write an algorithm to figure out profitability on these matters; someone probably already has...

Seriously, I wouldn't be a customer for one, myself. The things I'd want to be doing would never require such a fast twist with a .223 chambering. At some point longer and heavier bullets must tend to get ridiculous out of a .223. It just seems to take so much energy to get them out there that soon it must become an exercise in diminishing returns.

'Bout then, my mind turns to the 22 Nosler.

Barrel companies do need to operate at a profit.

I'm pretty sure you'll be needing a 1:8" for those 75gr ELD-M's and that it will do the job quite well. I'm shooting the 75gr HPBT-Match out of a 24: 1:9", and it works well..

Well I overlooked it but after looking closer Bugholes does offer Savage prefits with Bartlein barrels for $500!!! Thats what I was looking for. Middle ground between a $350 CBI or $750-$800 shouldered barrel. Going to get it ordered up.

Greg spins up barrels that hammer. Been running one of his Bartlein pre-fits all year. It's been great.

Been considering one of Greg's prefits for my next barrel, but how much better can I expect it to do than my Criterion? This is six shots from two different loads from my Shilen DGR with CBI 6.5x47 barrel.

I have a Pac-Nor 3 groove pre-fit for my 260 AI. Action is a Shilen DGR (Stiller Predator threaded for a Savage).

My best 3 shot grop with it was .36 and the gun rings steel at 1000 yards easily. Cleans easy as well. I've had it for almost 2 years. Have about 1400 rounds down the barrel.
