Savage rifle recommendations

Guys I'm building a short action centerfeed Savage in 308. I have the action with an accu-trigger and a factory Savage heavy barrel. I'm asking for recommendations on a stock and a muzzle brake. I'm leaning heavily towards the B&C tactical Medalist, for costs and features. I've also found a guy on another forum that builds brakes and I can get one for under $100 installed! They appear to be a nice brake, but I'm curious of what you guys are running and why.

Here's what I have so far.

Action and barrel are both from a model 10, bought on here from different guys. Action came with Farrel 20moa base, so that's covered. I thought I most post my build here as it comes along also.

For cost and features the B&C is hard to beat I'm thinking about putting that same stock on the 300 RUM I just got. The built in bedding block is probably my favorite thing about it. You can skim bed if you want to but it's not necessary. I'm not sure on a muzzle break under $100 installed. I know the VIAS is about $150 installed. Any particular reason your putting a break on a .308?

just for cosmetics and the fact that I've never owned a rifle with a brake on it. I would like to put one on my 7mag, if I ever put a heavy barrel on it! I'm curious as to what kind of recoil reduction one can get, plus it will then be threaded for the can as well!

Not running a brake on my .308.

I am running the B&C tactical/varmint stock, i have a blind magazine. When funds allow, the stock is going to Jeff at CDI for bottom metal fit.

You don't say if you have a DBM setup or an internal box mag set up.

If you have a factory DBM steup, you will nedd to have the B&C stock milled, it is a fine stock, but now you are adding another 60 or 70 dollars to the cost.

You could buy a stockade stock money saver and do the finish work yourself, or a choate tactical, which is actually a very nice stock.

Good call on the Choate fdkay. I'm currently running the Choate Tactical and that thing is a tank and has the bedding block as well. The Stockade is great too but it will also need to be bedded so you tack on a few bucks for that too. Any of these 3 are great stocks for their price and will serve you well J. As far as the brake, hey do it if that's what you want to but the .308 doesn't really have any recoil it'll be like shooting a .22 with the brake on it

I don't own a savage but that seems like you are on the right track.

A muzzle brake for a .308 IMHO is over kill and useless.. I have a friend who put one on his SPS 700 and says it reduces recoil by about 40% but its a huge brake and honestly its just because he has a brick on the end of the barrel keeping the muddle down. It didn't really increase accuracy for him at all.

those are more for high caliber rifles like 50's,338,7mm and something with real heavy recoil. I say keep on track skip the muzzle brake.

I have the B&C tac/varmit on mine as well as the cdi precision bottom metal. I really find it hard to beat it. I think its an awesome setup. I did all the inletting on my stock for the DBM with a high speed dremel like aparatus as well as a drill and drill bit. Take your time and be careful and you should be fine. Im going to drill out the factory pillars in the B&C and skim bed the action, pillar bed and then I will also bed the DBM just cause I can. I thought about putting a small brake on my .243, because I like the fact that if I want to watch the bullet impact in my scope on the target it will allow me to do so.

I had a 12bvss in 300wsm with a custom brake on it and the medalist stock. Hardly any recoil, probably 30-40% recoil reduction due to break. I dont think I would put one on the 308, it's pretty tame as recoil goes. I liked my medalist better than the choate tactical, but I had to buy a choate when I went to the long action 116, the medalist is only available in short action. The choate is nice and durable, but the fit and finish is much better on the medalist. My barrel sits off center in the choate, and the mold seams were really pronounced on it. And the stock will not hold standard paint (krylon, etc). I'm having to order some duracoat to put gap camo on it. I would go with the medalist or step up to a nicer stock, like mcmillan or manners, if you have time to wait.
If you're planning on going with a magazine setup, check out the new sharpshootersupply acme conversion. Heard a lot of good stuff on it and I'm ordering one for my 308 savage 18" build.
Pick up a rifle basix trigger, much better than the accutrigger and will make a bigger difference in your shooting than the brake probably will.
the stockade stocks are also nice, and a good price on the money savers as fdkay mentioned above.

well sounds like a good plan anyhow. I'm still gonna put the brake on, just for cosmetics mostly, I think anyways. I'll upgrade the trigger as well at some point. thanks guys

Anybody recommend replacing recoil lug or will the factory lug do? I am planning on building this rifle to use for work related duties. Hopefully they have another class at the beginning of the year!

I need to consider optics at this point as well. I know this is not the right place for it, but instead of starting a new thread, what optics do you guys think. I'm looking at a 2-10 mag range for a decent price. I need at least enough elevation to get 600yds out of the 308, which is not a problem. My Vortex Viper will do that, but since I'm paying for this rifle, the price needs to not be out of reach. Any recommendations on that would be appreciated. I know what I want, but USO is out of my range!

I have a savage 10 fp in a McMillan A5 stock and it is a hammer.

I don't have a Savage but I can say that a brake is nice! Especially if you are suffering from shoulder injuries/issues!
Now I need a brake for my 300 WM and I'll be set.

I would swap the recoil lug out for one from Northland Shooters Supply, or Sharp Shooter Supply while you have the barreled action apart.

I like the Stockade rifle stocks with the adjustable cheekrest.

A stock from Kevin Rayhill at http://www.stockadegunstocks.com/# would fit the bill nicely. At 235 dollars for a stock with the same construction technique as a McMillan you can't go wrong. Lead time is the only downside though, he is at about 16 weeks or so I do believe.

yeah he makes a very nice peice of kit! I'm not sure what kinda of time frame I'll be in. Evidently nobody has anything lying around that they are not using, as I've post WTB on all the forums that I am a part of with no results. Alot of it will depend on when I go to class!

I just sold my savage 10fp 6.5x47 built rifle and it had a B&C medalist/tactical stock. I can say the stock did a great job and I have no complaints about it.

Also I would 2nd mbrittan308's advice on the upgraded recoil lug.
