I'm about to buy one of these rifles. Can't make my mind up on caliber. .22lr or .17hmr. Probaly will plink and shoot varmits with it. Which would you prefer and why? Thanks for your time!

if any serious varmint hunting is going to take place, the .17hmr or .22mag even, but can get pricey to plink with. gotta make up your mind on what you want to do more of first.

I went with the Savage MkII TR in .22 lr. Ammo is cheaper and readily available. Also with .22, you have more options: If I'm shooting squirels in my yard and don't want to alarm the neighbors, I can shoot CB Longs. If I want accuracy at 100yds, I can shoot subsonics or good match ammo. For plain old plinkin, grab a cheap bulk pack at Wally World.
I'm planning a little "experiment" with my .22 on Monday.
I'll let you know if it works out.
