Savage- why always 26''?

I used to lean towards savage fcv but 26" barrel scared me. IMHO it's way too long. First of all, I will not shoot at more than 300yds (there are not so many such ranges in Europe). Secondly, as proven by the case of Steyr Scout, you can have pretty good accuracy at 300yds with 48cm barrel.
So, I am wondering about buying a savage fcv and cutting down the barrel to 20". Has anyone of you done such thing? If so, I would appreciate sharing your opinion on how it affects accuracy.

no experiance with cutting a factory savage but i have had a few barrels cut. it's a popular thing to do. the calibers the FCV comes in should be fine at 20". The twist rate is the only thing that would limit you on the FCV.

cut it down and enjoy.

Outstanding.

you should be able to get whatever aftermarket custom you want in any twist and you can always cut it down. if the extra inches help you get the 155s to 1k like the 28"-32" palma shooters do (isnt that right?), its why they made it 26" maybe? just guessing based on reading. but i guess its all about how you are going to use it and will the length of the 26" compared to a shorter 24" or 20" down to 18" will be better. i think my 24" is nose heavy, but if i was gonna chop it, id go 18" or look for a cheap heavy barrel take off to cut down.

Re: Savage- why always 26''?

Savage ran their 10FP's for years at 26" because that's what the market wanted (ala-R700P and PSS's).

Nowday's the cool kids like short stuff. Me, I'll fenagel my way around with my 26" barrels. They haven't caused me any problems yet.

Now for the guys that are actually getting in and out of vehicles, etc-hell yeah 20" can get the job done. Me, I prefer to take advantage of any advantage I can.....

Re: Savage- why always 26''?

If you never shoot over 300 yards sure.. Why not because you don't need the extra velocity. Only need the extra lenght if you're going for 1000 plus. Well then again that depends on what cal. you're going with. If it's a 308 by all means go for it.

Good luck,
Merritt

I did exactly that with a 10FP in .223 Rem a few years ago. Bought it new and took it straight to the smith to have the barrel cut. It shoots great and has taken prairie dogs out to 500 yards with ease. I would have no problem cutting a factory Savage barrel down again if I needed another 20" barrel.

This was built as a hunting rifle, but I have used it on steel too. It has a factory tupperware stock that I reinforced with steel U channel and bedding along the fore end. Sanded off the checkering and coated with Brownells spray grit, then painted.

But like the other replies, you could also do the PC and get a 20" from the get go.
