Why a 7.62 SBR for hogs? Why not use a 16" 7.62 Carbine? You save $200 (tax stamp) right off the bat and the longer barrel will provide a little more accuracy. A .308 SBR would be practical in a CQB situation, but not so much for hog hunting. I suggest going with the 16" barrel and save yourself some hard-earned cash.

Re: sbr in 7.62mm

I dont own a SBR and I find this as an excellent way to justify it. And its much easier to use when climbing in a treestand and moving through heavy brush. Sure 16" is more accurate, but at 50-75 yds, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me. If I need longer range, I'll pull out one with a 16".

50-75 yards? Do you already have an AR10 lower? If not at this distance, just use a .223/5.56 or if like me you can not use a .22 caliber for big game (VA laws) I'd go with a 300 blackout on an ar15 lower. I'm waiting for my form 1 for my 300 blackout SBR to come in, but I may go to my SOT and shoot mine next weekend. I'll post pictures and video if I do.

I do, but I actually think I'm going to go with 6.8 spc. I did quite a bit of reading last night and it seems that it will out perform a 7.62 when using a 10-12 inch barrel, in terms of velocity and penetration. I'm just not a big fan of using .22 cal on a hog or deer.

Re: sbr in 7.62mm

I had a 6.8 that I built around a 20" bison armory barrel. Sub 1" groups at 100 yards, it was awesome. But it required it's own mags, it's own bolt, nothing was interchangable with my 5.56. I sold the 6.8 to finance a 300 blackout SBR.

There is alot more factory ammo available for the 300 blackout and it's cheaper than the 6.8 ammo too. You can use existing mags and bolts. Inside of 200 yards one is not going to outperform the other.

Re: sbr in 7.62mm

I've seriously considered 300 blk for the reasons you mentioned, my concern was will it be around for a long time? 200 yards would be absolute max for this gun anyway, most shots within 100. What do you plan on using yours for?

I don't think it's going anywhere, I used to reload and I will again if it's necessary, but I don't think the blackout is going anywhere.

I hunt deer on some damage permits in Virginia. Currently we use archery equipment because we hunt mostly smaller (2-3 acre) lots. We do hunt some large wooded properties where a firearm could safely be discharged. However, the homeowners would not want the noise associated with discharging a firearm.

My SBR in 300 blackout sports an 11.3" wilson combat barrel and will be wearing a YHM 7.62 SS suppressor once my form 4 clears the ATF. I'll use subsonic ammo for truely quiet shooting. I can separate the upper from the lower and put both halves in my backpack with the can. No one will be the wiser when I walk through their back yard carrying my bow and backpack. Once in the woods and up in the tree I'll assemble the AR and go to work. I'll still take any shot I'm able to with my bow as I truely love to bow hunt. The AR will just extend my effective range.

Re: sbr in 7.62mm

Sadly, in GA I can't use a suppressor for hunting however there is a law in progress to allow it. Here in AR, as far as I can tell its legal. 300 blk would meet both my needs it seems. I think the solution has been found.
