I'm thinking of building a SBR and was wondering on the steps to take, to not over draw my money on this and have it tried up for so long to get the stamp back.

Can you just buy the lower and send for your form 4 stuff or do you have to have the whole SBR built before you send out the form 4 on it?

Re: SBR ?

If you put together a non-factory SBR, you will have to use a form 1 since you are "manufacturing" it. You will have to get the lower engraved with your trust name (I am assuming a trust) and your location (e.g., Joe Blows Trust, Handjob MO).

If you buy a factory SBR such as a Colt 6933, you use a form 4.

Re: SBR ?

I am currently building one myself. So far I have the lower built and the paperwork filled out. What you have to know and maybe someone that already has a SBR can help you with is the overall length of shortest config you plan on going with. Say is you want the 22LR upper in 5.5 inches but on the form 1 you only listed a 9 inch 300 blk out and the overall length. At this point you would not be able to go under a 9 inch barrel config. When filling out the form make sure you go with the lowest possible barrel and overall length you plan on using for the lower. I am going to do a 4.5 inch 22LR upper So that way i can go from 4.5 inch barrel up. Hope this helps and makes sense.

Re: SBR ?

Once you form 1 a lower you can have as many uppers as you want provided the original started caliber and length is still in your possession. I have a 5.56 SBR with an 11.5bbl for an overall length of "x" (sorry dont know it out the to of my head). I can get a 300blk upper with 9bbl and be golden since I still have the original upper.

To the OP, I bought a stripped lower, had it engraved then sent the paperwork to the NFA. I went form 1 as an individual. Its going to take time, I went from check cashed Nov10 and pending shortly after, with an approval in Mar11. Unfortunately your 200 wil be tied up, theres nothing that can be done. While you are waiting for your stamp you can still use the lower but it must be with a 16 inch upper. Absolutely do not assemble your shorty upper prior to getting your stamp. the way I look at it is if you buy a factory SBR your dealer keeps it anyways till you get the stamp.

It sounds like you've made up your mind to do an SBR, just have patience and enjoy the time waiting.

Re: SBR ?

Yes I don't mind the money up front for the tax stamp and the lower. Just wasn't wanting to buy the whole SBR up front and the 200 for the stamp out of pocket and then have the big wait.
