Hey dudes, first post here. I Just purchased a Scar 20 off a guy here in NC. The rifle is flawless. Guy I bought it from was super nice and told me to bring my optic and offered to help me dial it in. The only thing I had readily available was a Nikon Monarch 4-16x SFP. I want to move into a nicer FFP optic but im completely overwhelmed and back and forth between what I want. Ideally Id like to have a NF 4-16x ATACR but that price point is a little rich for my taste. Ive seen them on eBay in the $1700 range but that's still just a little more than I think I can stomach with a young family. What are some suggestions for a similar optic? I really want that kind of quality glass now that I have invested a somewhat substantial amount of money in the rifle but id like to keep it $1000-at most $1500. The gun will be used for plinking out to a max of about 600 yds at most and probably spend a day or two in the deer woods a year. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help and look forward to being a part of this community!

You bought a kick ass rifle. Don’t cheap out on an optic.
I think that a F1 ATACR would be perfect.
Check the EE for a used one if a new one is too much of a heavy lift right now.

Thanks for the reply gasgun. I have wanted a scar 17 for years and when the 20 came out I decided to start saving my cash for one. But yea, I want to get the optic the gun deserves. Maybe I should just run the monarch for a while until I can save up enough to pull the trigger on an F1. If anyone has one they will let go for 1500 shoot me a pm 😅

The SCAR is perfectly suited for a LPVO. I have the new Razor HD Gen III 1-10x MRAD on both my 20S and SR-25. It's a fantastic "tactical" optic that has a true RDS-like 1x, so you can make your new SCAR your go-to HD/SHTF/Hunting rifle. Get the Scalarworks LEAP 07 mount.

Honestly, for your usage, I think that's the best-of-all-worlds compromise optic.

I just got one too and I'll need an optic for it later on. I put a USO SR8 1-8x on it because it was all I had laying around but it's not what I'd keep on it for sure.

For cheap? Honestly? I'd put a 3.5-10x Leupold Mk4 on it. It was good enough for the Army and the M110. Seriously, it's "good enough" and will get the job done. But they're SFP w/MOA adj. and mildot reticle, so not the best for sure.

But I'm also considering the ATACR in 4-16.

Whatever mount/rings you get, just make sure they don't use a nut or whatever sticking out on the offhand side... I use Badger mounts and they're great, but on the Mk20 they get in the way of the charging handle causing your knuckles to hit every time.

i use a bobro engineering scar mount on mine, because they come with the levers on either side, depending on what side you want to run the charging handle. they are expensive though...but will give discounts to LE/MIL.

I temporarily mounted a 2.5-10 NXS on mine because it's what i had around. Turns out it needs a little more magnification, especially trying to throw a zero on it. Somewhere in that 14-16x would be about perfect.

Hensoldt 4-16x56 H59 (the new version) is the best option or Zero Compromise 4-20. A 1-8 is not the correct choice for the 20s. It sounds like the Nightforce SHV 4-14 would be ideal for you with their ultralight mount. You can pick them up for $800. They are ffp, light, tough. Just a good scope.

I have a Leupold mk5 3.6-18 on mine. I highly recommend some higher power as the rifle is easily capable of longer shots. When funds allow I would like to replace with a ZCO 4-20. I find 4x is as low as one really needs for a rifle like this. My scar 17 has the lpvo.

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. I had looked at the NF SHV but noticed some have the target turret for elevation and not for windage and some have just a basic hunting turret with caps. I feel like I would want to have the ability to dial windage as well. For me I think 16x would be plenty enough. I have hit a steel silhouett target with my 6.5 @ 1000 yds on 10x power out of a cheaper vortex HST. Its obviously not ideal but 16x I think would suit my needs about perfect. Decisions decisions...
