Hiya Guys,

I just purchased a second hand Schmidt and Bender PM 5-25x56. Its an awesome scope, I had a Nightforce before and was very happy with it till I looked at how clear and crisp the Schmidt was and how clear and crisp the reticule stayed at all magnifications.

My problem is mounting it.

I have just read the online manual here >>> Online Schmidt & Bender Manual. and rather than make things clear it has totally confused me.

My understanding now is this.

Schmidt and Bender scopes are made at the factory with the reticule canted high in the tube to give maximum elevation for long shots. To compensate for this and to allow you to make use of the cant they recommend you mount the scope on a 20-40 front downward canting rail.....Am I right so far???

The rifle that I am fitting this scope to is a New Tikka T3 Tactical in .223.

Tikka T3 Tactical

I will be using it for long range varmint shooting and on the range out to 1000yds.

Would I still need the canted base for these uses or would the factory fitted flat picatinny rail do the job ok ???

In addition I am a litle confused with the explanation as to how to use the turrets. I have used rifles for many years and am very familiar with Nightforce turrets, how are the Schmidt turrets different ???

The online manual tries to explain about lifting the turrets for fine adjustments.....whats all that about ???

Also, I am looking at different mounting rings and am not sure which to use. Accuracy international bases are already canted at 45MOA to suit the Schmidt and Bender scopes and seem to be quite reasonably priced..... Are they any good though ???
Accuracy International 34mm One Piece Mount.
As I am from the UK I can get this bases for as little as $200.

Or should I get a separate canted picatinny rail and some Badger Ordanance type mounts???
Badger Ordanance USMC rings.

If I was to purchase the USMC model Badger mounts what height would I need ???

Your help and advice would be very gratefully received.

Re: Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 Help Needed !!!

I dont recommend a .223 for 1000 yard shooting. You would be better served by a 308, and even better by a .243 or .260. The mounts accuracy international makes are very nice, and sturdy and should hold up very well. I think you should check out the Near Alphamounts and the Spuhr mounts before you buy though. Good luck.

Yes you can use a canted base but you probably won't need it. You shouldn't have to lift the turrets to make adjustment. The manual is probably talking about zeroing the turrets.

Both of my 5-25's are mounted in Badger 1.0 rings.

Re: Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 Help Needed !!!

Rob put the scope on the rifle and zero like any other. If you hit the bottom, which is the zero stop, then just loosen the three allen screws, spin the knob up and then retighten. Using the knobs and rezeroing are like the NF.

You can mount the scope on a flat base or a base up to 45 MOA. You will just have more usable MOA in the scope with the canted base.

As to which mount, does that Tikka have an integral rail built into the receiver or is it attached with screws? It look lower than other bases. 1" height rings work with base on my rifles but my base looks a little higher. 1" height would be the minimum height I would tell you to try. Check out Seekins Precision as well.

Re: Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 Help Needed !!!

Thanks Guys,

I really do like the look of the Badger Ordanance mounts, they look heavy duty and in keeping with a tactical rifle.

The picatinny rail on the Tikka comes flat as standard,I was going to spend more on the rifle and go custom, but I already have a .243 in Tikka T3 Super Varmint and it gives me .5" groups at 200yds with homeloads so spending more on custom just didn't make sense to me when I can get that from a factory Tikka.

I have decided to go down a caliber now as the 243 was too much gun for most of my hunting, which is rabbits, hares, foxes and Muntjac deer (Small Deer).

The .243 was blowing them all up and ruining meat so I have decided to save money on powder, bullets recoil and go .223 instead.

I purchased the Schmidt and Bender PMII for £1450 second hand which is about $2400. Its in good condition and only has a very light scope ring at the front. I sent it to Schmidt and bender and they checked it out for me and gave it a clean bill of health.

Re: Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 Help Needed !!!

Its a Schmidt and Bender PMII 5-25x56 with Second focal plane P4 fine reticule.

I have already been offered £200 more than I paid for it so I am really happy with it.

I can use this scope for 5 years and still sell it boxed for what I gave for it.
