Rifle Scopes Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

I was out training with a local SWAT sniper team today and I had to cut my training short because my S&B crapped out on me....again!!

The problem is that the scope is causing my shots to go all over the place. For example, shooting at 300y and my shots hitting 6 to 7 inches right of POA. Initially it was subtle enough to make me question my shooting. I spent the last month or so scratching my head and second guessing, my body position, my trigger control, my breathing, pretty much everything. Just recently I started to consider the scope as the problem. I'm a solid shooter but I'm not one to blame my gear when I pull a shot or two. It wasn't until today shooting at 300y that it really answered the "what the f**k is going on" question.

This isn't my first issue with their scopes. A couple of years ago I had issues with one of their scopes too. The whole situation was an absolute nightmare.

At this point they agreed to send me a new one, so that's good. But I have to admit I'm really tired of having scope issues every year and half or so.

So I'm curious any other S&B users out there having problems with their scope.

Thanks
R.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

rings, mount, action, torq, if your running a suppressor or a break, did it come loose? how many rounds through the barrel? if it's the scope the good news is you'll have one to use while yours is fixed. more info is needed.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

Everything is tight, no issue that I'm aware of. Everything is loctite down.

Suppressor also tight. Barrel has about 1600 rounds

I know, it can be a few things but with the track record I've had with S&B it was my default cause. Every time I've had issues it was the scope. Even when it comes back from service and supposed to be fixed, it's not and comes back with an unrelated or lets say new broken part.

S&B is giving me a new one.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

Never had any problems with any of mine but they are made by man and anything that is can break. My oldest I bought used almost 6 years ago and is still going strong.

I am glad that S&B is taking good care of you. It sucks that you have problems but it helps to get good service when you do.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

I had a problem similar to yours once.

Fiddle farted around with the situation for months. It was driving me batty! I finally bought new rings, new USO,worked up new load. The rifle would shoot little groups but every time I went out they would hit on a different POI. Turned out the barrel was gradually becoming more and more loose during the whole fiasco. I actually cracked it loose with my bare hands,LOL.

I know of 2 other guys here on the Hide who's S&B's broke. Of course I know of or have seen just about every high end scope break. Oh well, nothings perfect, especially in the scope world it seems.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

Could you give us details? Is your S&B a PMII? Is it a single turn or double turn? Exactly what S&B is it? I understand that the double turn turrets are more complex and therefore more trouble prone than the single turn turrets. I am not stating this as a fact but rather something I had read some years ago.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

My 3-12x50 that is Premier special - so circa what 8 / 9 yrs or so ago? It locked up last spring. Sent it in, had it back in a couple of weeks - no problems since.

Good luck

Sure, it's a 5x25x56 PMII double turn clockwise MIL/MIL turret.

Re: Schmidt & Bender Scope Problems

Interesting that it is a double turn. I am curious what S&B knows about single turn vs double turn reliability. Usually the more complex something is the less reliable it is. Scopes are becoming very sophisticated with the addition of electronic components. A single turn non illuminated S&B might be my next scope purchase.
