I have a DPMS 308 16" barrel with a Miculek comp and need a scope for no more than 400 yds shooting 170 gr bullets. Doubt I'll go any further than 400 yds because of our range limitations. I do not need illumination. I'd like to stay in the $500-800 price range and not have to sell a kidney to pay for it. Which sturdy scopes in my price range can handle the semi auto 308? I don't have the experience to just pick a scope and could use some advice to make an informed decision to get it right the first time.

Thanks
Scott

Thanks for your reply .... I had been reading a lot in the forums on scopes trying to figure it out on my own but not having much luck. Vortex was a choice but after reading a few bad reviews I'm not sure again.

SWFA SS 10x or whichever magnification you like. I have a 20x and for $300 it is outstanding. Nice positive clicks very clear and well built. You might want to check out some swarovskis and zeiss used scopes if you dont need magnification or to do much dialing you cannot beat the clarity. You could get a really nice used one for 7-800.

Even though the Vortex 2.5-10x32 is part of the PST line, it pretty much is in a class all of its own. For its price, you cannot beat the glass clarity, features, and slim design. You pretty much have to spend $1K more to get a NF with equivalent glass and features (but they still don't have SF and are SFP). I am putting my Vortex 2.5-10x32 on my GAP-10 when it comes in, and I am confident it will fit the bill just nicely. For a 16" 308, I think it fits the bill quite nicely, esp if max range is 400 yards, unless you intend to use as a heavy run and gun close engagements weapon, in which case I would say go for the Vortex PST 1-4.

For most 16" AR10 platform rifle I would recommend a 1-6x. The Vortex HD 1-6x are great. If your looking for precision then I would look at scope like the Nightforce 2.5-10x or the 3-15x50mm. If your looking for cost factor I would recommend looking at the Vortex PST or Burris XTR II.

If we can be of help let me know.
