Hello All,

I am new to here and getting into precision shooting. I am about to pick up a Tikka T1X 22LR to be able to practice cheaper and have the ability to shoot at more ranges.

What I currently own:
Remington 700 ADL .308
- Magpul Hunter Stock
- Vortex VIPER 6.5-20X50 PA w/ BDC reticle
- Burris 420162 XTR Rings

I am wondering if it would be wise to put my existing scope on the Tikka and get an upgraded scope for the .308 (Thinking Vortex Viper HST 6-24x50 or HS LR 6-24 FFP, or if i should just go get a scope for just the T1X, which I will likely shoot more due to costs and able to shoot at more locations.
  • What is the platform for the scope? Bolt Action Tikka T1X
  • What cartridge are you shooting? 22LR
  • What is your intended use for the scope? PRS, Benchrest, Target, Steel
  • What type of conditions will you typically shoot in? Daylight, Lowlight
  • What are the typical distances you intend to shoot? 100-300 yds, under 100 yds
  • Are there any specific specifications you would like? Nothing in particular
  • What is the price range you can afford? Under $600
Thanks for helping out a newbie!

Check out the rimfire thread. All you could ever want to know on this has been discussed the last couple months. The Athlon Midas Tac seems to be the majority leader for .22 trainer applications.

Dont waste your money on an hst. Get the gen 2 pst from europtic for 100 bucks more if anything, certainly dont spend over 400 on an hst.

The midas tac seems to be the default recommendation.

If you get a nice new scope for either youre gonna want to replace the current bdc viper. So just buy two midas tacs lol

Any of the "mid grade" stuff made in Japan will be good , like the new Redfield , Simmons , BSA, etc. Rimfire scopes are a little less $$$.

I have a Simmons "Deerfield" on an older Marlin .22 Magnum and it's a very good, clear scope, I would look into a Simmons.

Avoid anything made in China or very cheap optics, just not worth it.

this. is not what you want to do.

Does the vortex parallax go low enough for your liking? When I was looking for a rim fire scope I wanted one that went down to 25yds but some scopes didn’t allow that. I ended up putting a nightforce SHV f1 that was lying around on it, which is nice but I agree with friends it’s overkill.

Don't get a Vortex HS/HS-LR/HST, they were ok scopes when first released but are completely outclassed by current offerings.
Also doesn't adjust parallax below 50yards which is an issue for 22lr.

As mentioned the Athlon Midas Tac is very popular, or the Ares or a Vortex PST Gen 2.

I have the vortex diamondback tactical 4-12 (1 inch) on one 22 trainer and the dB tactical 4-16 (30mm) on another. The 4-16 is a nice little scope for the price, the parallax will be clear down to 25yards without issue for me.

The 4-12 I bought on sale just because but the lack of parallax adjustment is a glaringly obvious shortcoming of that one. On a 20moa rail it’s got enough elevation to make hits on 6” steel at 300yds with FGMM that’s around 1080fps so that’s good but below about 70yds it’s not clear at all to me. A 50yd 1” dot is “fuzzy” (best way I can describe it) at 12 power.

The 4-16 is 100 bucks more but worth every penny for the clarity up close on a rimfire. If I ever decide to spend real money on a high end 22 I’ll splurge a bit more on glass but for a mod’d 10/22 or a RPRR and my usage the 350 dollar diamondback tactical 4-16 is a great little budget scope.

I've got Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50 scopes on my lightweight sporter V-22 and a couple of Howa Mini customs. Really enjoy shooting with them, and the fact that the parallax will focus down to 10yds is a real plus for a .22RF rifle.
