imo depends on what you are doing, benchrest ok, everything else i think it's not needed and a hinderance - that is if it is a fixed power. if a variable (6-24 ish) i like the option of increasing magnification at longer ranges or to use the mounted optic as a sort of spotting scope.
i tend to "lose" the target as the FOV is super narrow at 50 on 20+X, and on hot days the mirage is going to kill your view with a fixed high power - that bullseye will dance around like fred astaire.
either way, if you go with 20/24x scope @ 50, make sure it has an adjustable objective to focus in on that shorter distance.
