Here is the story behind this post but need some help at the same time. I am in the military and just got the word that I may be selected to attend sniper school. I currently own a Remington 700 SPS Tatical .308 with a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9x40. I am in the process of returning my current scope and ordering the SWFA SS 10x42. My question is will the current rings I have on the weapon work or not. Thanks....

Re: Scope for my rifle

Depends on the rings you have. If you are using 30mm rings with inserts, you are in luck.

Nikon is 1" tube // SS 10x40 is 30mm

Re: Scope for my rifle

First of all, good luck on your success during the selection process!

Any 30mm ring will clamp the tube, but not necessarily the best to use. The next question is "how much do you want to spend?". Do not "cheap-out" at this point. Having a scope "shoot loose" sux.

Since you are ordering the scope from SWFA (BTW, great guys to deal with), talk with them and ask for recommendations. They can set you up with the correct ring height and all.

There are several "bullet-proof" base/ring sets out there. (i.e. Badger, EGW, Near, Nightforce, Seekins, USO, etc.) My personal preference is Badger, but all these listed are all highly regarded here on the 'Hide.

Read the "stickys" at the beginning of this section for info on mounting and an excellent tutorial on determining ring height.
