I'm looking for a scope for my Ar-15 with WOA 18" SPR barrel. Right now I'm looking at the Weaver Tactical grand slam 3-10 x40mm with 1/10 mil adjustments and the Millet Tactical TRS-1 scope 4-16 power. Both are currently priced at $300, and I'm trying to stay around that price. Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Scope for SPR

I have an older IOR 2.5-10 FFP. Find something like that or the Super Sniper 3-9. If you absolutely can't afford that right now (or in the near future) get the weaver 3-10. Japanese Optics>Chinese all day long.

How much you want for the super sniper?

I wouldn't go that far, that weaver is plenty serviceable...not everyone can swing a NF/USO/IOR/S&B etc...

Re: Scope for SPR

this scope won't be my end all be all. I can go to about $400, but that's all for now. The scope I get right now will be on there until I can afford something else then the scope will migrate to a hunting rifle. I personally think $300 is a decent budget for a college kid.

I thought about the nikon and leupold scopes for the ar, but I know atleast the one uses the ballistics for a 55 gr bullet and I'll be more around a 69 gr bullet.

Re: Scope for SPR

If you spend $400, you could get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. Down the road when you have a little extra cash, send it in for some knobs. It'll be much, much better than the Weaver or the Millet as far as optics go. If you're shooting only to 300, just use MOA and you probably don't need rangefinding anyway.

Re: Scope for SPR

Thanks for the advice with the Millet, I was kind of learning towards it with the reviews and different things I heard about it. I'm not looking for the benchrest only scope since I do want to take my gun hunting in WV and the scope will prolly get transferred to a hunting rifle at some point.

With this in mind, I would certainly go with the Weaver. It's going to be plenty enough scope to do what you're looking for and won't be too big for a "hunting" rifle, afterwards. I own/have owned a few Milletts and they're good for the money, but not something I would want on a deer rifle.

Re: Scope for SPR

If you can deal with fixed power, you can get great glass at low prices. For example, the SWFA Super Sniper 6x42 or 10x42 are both $299 new. There are a couple of 10x42 for sale used right here in Snipershide forums for $225 to $280.

On a side note, it's sort of a shame to have an SPR with a nice barrel and only be able to shoot 300 yards. Hopefully you can find a longer range some day and stretch out that barrel.

Sorry BCP I already sold that scope. I bought two of the 5-20's. One for my .308 and one for my Spr thinking it would be nice to have matching scopes. However it was to much scope and weight on my Spr. The 3-9 SS was a nice scope. I even walked that Spr out to 1200 yards with the 3-9 at something like 19.8 Mils up. I have a lot of respect for the SS line of scopes but decided I didn't need FFP in a 3-9. I found this out will stalking game in dense timber. Maybe the milquad reticle in the 3-9 would help but I don't have one to run so I can't say for sure. The Leupold hasn't proven itself in terms of hunting yet but I'll find out this weekend or next on some turkey.

Back to the ops question. I would take a hard look at the SS 6x fixed. If I had a hunting rifle that is the scope that would sitting on top of it. I believe it has something like 120 of moa adjustment. 6x is great for hunting and could easily be used out to 1000 yards. I like mil/mil but would compromise for that scope. Not to mention I run a 18" WOA bbl on my Spr shooting 77'smks.

It does, tremendously. The Mil-Quad in the 3-9 is way more visible under such conditions than the standard mildot.

I choose the sightron Si 3-9 mil-dot, and here's why.

I ran the ss 3-9 for a couple years, and always kept coming back to two major faults. 1. I have figured out that exposed knobs on an ar15, that is more than a range queen, is a bad idea. I have been out several evenings with ss 3-9. And when climbing through rough brush, I never had confidence that my knobs didn't get bumped off zero. With covered knobs or a zero stop, this is a non issue.
2. Turning the mag ring is a absolute no go in hurried situations. Constantly, I would have trouble turning my mag ring from 3 up to 9. This has been addressed by the switchview, but the switchview is too large and most of the time ends up being a hindrance in other ways. I believe the ss 3-9 is a perfect scope for a mid-range bolt rifle.

The sightron is easy to adjust, and being a second focal plane isn't a hindrance to me in the 3-9 zoom range. It has covered knobs which are a big bonus. All I do is set my zero at 100 yards and memorize the holdovers to each yardage. The way I figure it, if I have the distance between me and the target to require a holdover, I have time to turn the mag all the way up to 9.
