Scope lapping?

Anyone made a scope lapping setup? I was thinking of turning down a piece of aluminum to 1.1875"(30mm) and adding a handle and then using some lapping compound. Would that work?

It works, and can be purchased from brownells: 1in or 30mm.

I don't think the aluminum rod will work too well for you since you are lapping aluminum rings with an aluminum rod. A steel rod would be better IMHO since the lapping compound will eats away at the rings and true them in the process instead of the rings AND the rod at the same time. How about this? Aluminum bar isn't the way to go. Steel yes. It needs to be very straight, true, smooth, and the diameter needs to be accurate all the way down. Also, make sure you really need to lap the rings. With very high end rings (Seekins, American Rifle Co., etc...) I've found that they require no lapping. Cheaper rings sometimes don't require lapping, sometimes they require a little, sometimes they require a lot or are too far out to be fixed with lapping.

Agreed, remember to combine that with a quality rail.

I have a local guy I buy ground and polished rod from, hes very very reasonable. I have bought a piece of the right size and put a handle on it and roll.
