Optics selection

I am old (65) and need higher powers to shoot. Mainly target shooting at 100/200 yards but looking forwards to 500 and beyond.

Currently have one AR15 in 223 Wylde that shoots 0.5 or less MOA ay 200 yards. One AR15 and two Savage bolt rifles in 6.8 SPC that also shoot under 1 MOA. Have one Savage 10TR that shoots 0.25 or better MOA. Just purchased a DPMS AR10 in 308 that so far is shooting sub MOA.
For me to see the target well at 200 yards I need 25 power, currently have 3 scopes that cost around $200 that works well in the 115 degree heat of Las Vegas. They are 8.5-25x50 with 30mm tubes, do not have problems with heat shimmer ever.

I just can not justify a Nightforce or other $1500-3000 scope.
Looking for better optics but under $500 retail.

Millett 6-25x56 LRS-1 Tactical 35mm Riflescope with 0.1 moa clicks. Power 6-25x56 with 35 mm tube. With 140 MOA adjustment. I like this scope best, used my neighbors Millet scope, really like the fine reticle. Most places that have ratings rate this scope very high for the category.

Konus 8.5-32x52 Konuspro M-30 30mm Riflescope, interesting scope built-in Anti Canting Bubble System. I actually have zero problems with canting

Nikko Stirling 6-24x56 Nighteater 30mm Riflescope

Nikko Stirling 6-24x56 Targetmaster 30mm Riflescope

Falcon Menace 5.5-25x56 Tactical 30mm Riflescope, First Focal Plane ML16 Reticle 1/10 MIL Target Knobs

Generally, high magnification low priced scopes diminish image quality in the higher powers pretty quickly. Most of the ones you have listed have Chinese glass and construction, but may be serviceable. Remember, dropping $400+ on Chinese-quality optics is a sunk-cost; as resale value is very low. If you leveraged $500 into a more quality, yet budget-friendly setup, you would likely be happier in the long run, IMO.

The Vortex PST 6-24x50 is highly praised as a best bang for the buck for tactical shooters at around $700-900 depending on focal plane. Out of your price range, yes, but loose the tactical features and keep the great optical qualities for a target scope and you have the Vortex HS series. Lifetime unconditional warranty as well.

This would be my recommendation for what you're looking for; demo pricing too: 6-24x50 V-plex Viper HS Vortex - Camera Land NY

My brother has used the Konus Pro M30 6.5-25X44 on his Remington 308 SPS Tactical for over 3 years with out any problems. It's has 0.1 mil/mil turrets and seems to track well. As noted at 25X image while still sharp is darker than I would like but still quite useable. One of the better Chinese built scopes. At just around $300 not a bad scope.

an swfa 20x42 would fall into that price range if you do not need a variable. i bet it will track true. price 299. you can really get some nice stuff in the 700-1000 dollar range. once i bought into that price range i have been thing my gun collection and filling my scope collection. bushnell elite tactical. weaver burris used on ebay there are 6-24 and 4-16 models that come up for 500-700. i do not have a scope that goes to 20 power yet my bushnell 3.5-21 trmr2 in on the way. i think i like scopes better than guns now. i can see things better on 10 x with my mark 4 than 16x with my bushnell scope cheif that has since went down that ebay road. are they worth the extra money. to me yes. i am afraid i will have to find a second job and wife if i ever get my hands on a USO or S&B.

Sold one of my AR15 uppers so I am closer to a better scope. Plus if I sell one or two more I won't have to buy another gun safe!

Had a horrible day at the range, first time in two years that I did not have a single bullseye.. My DPMS AR10 just does not like 155 GR bullets.
It still gave me a one inch 5 shot group with Right2Bear 168 A-Max. But the thin 0.75 inch barrel does not like long strings of shots.

But I just got the DPMS 18 inch SASS 308 with fluting and teflon coating, their best barrel. So I will need a better scope for that upper.

Now all I have to do is sell my 11 boxes of 6.5 Creedmoor ammo and I will be almost there for a Vortex Viper HS 6-24x50, or maybe a PST second focal plane.

Thanks guys, I went to a lot of gun stores, although none have 25 power scopes in stock. But the Vortex was nice.

So I ordered that demo unit 6-24x50 V-plex Viper HS . Should be here just in time for my new upper to be finished.

Just got in the Clark Customs aluminum barrel nut for 308 DPMS pattern. Found a $21 carbon fiber hand guard. Using a Wilson combat adjustable gas block. Already had a DPMS upper receiver. Got this week from Midway the DPMS 18 inch SASS barrel, it is a work of art for the price paid ($258). Just ordered another Cooley muzzle brake. That brake on my Savage 308 reduces recoil to LESS than my 6.8 bolt actions.
