I am wanting to get into shooting more and want to get a Mil dot FFP scope but can't spend a ton of money on one at this time. I would like some recommendations on a scope that would be mil dot reticle with mil/mil and is FFP. Maybe something in the range of 3x15-50 or larger. Price would need to be nore more than about $600 give or take $100.

One rifle would be a Rem 700 5R .223 and the other would be a Rem 700 300 winmag that I am having built at the moment.

Uses wold be for fun and hunting, but I want to start shooting more to practice long range and becoming proficient in both shooting and using a scope with these characteristics.

Thanks.

For a $600+/- FFP, you're looking at the Weaver 3-15x EMDR or Bushnell Elite 3-12x44 and both of those are gonna be in the $730-750 range new.

There's always the BSA 4-14x mil/mil FFP for $250...but I wouldn't personally take that risk with my hard earned money.

If you can "settle" for SFP, I highly recommend the Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 MidwayUSA exclusive.

bushnell 3200 10x is good starter you have to remember though you get what you pay for in an optic. are you set on ffp or second focal plane? Bushnell also has the 12 power ffp

Re: Scope Recommendations - Starter

My advice, if you are constrained by a modest budget, is to go with a SFP scope.

Are you planning on ranging targets and require the flexibility to do so at different magnification levels? For instance, ranging a moving target requires a large FOV; or do you need to range after firing several shots and mirage may affect your ranging ability at your optic's highest magnification level?

If you're going to set a budget of $600, you need to decide if you really intend to perform the range techniques described in the situation above; of the answer is no, you are wasting your money on a FFP optic.

You can range with SFP scopes, but the subtensions do not remain constant. You'll need to divide by 2 at 1/2 power, 4 at 1/4 power ect. FFP just makes the math a tad easier.

I recommend the following:

Viper PST Riflescopes (30mm Tube, Illuminated Reticle) - SFP
Viper PST 4–16x50 Riflescope with EBR-1 Reticle (MRAD) PST-416S1-M @ $579.99
Viper PST 2.5–10x44 Riflescope with EBR-1 Reticle (MRAD) PST-210S1-M @ $449.99

Top these off with 30mm Seekins or Vortex rings and your just a tad over $600

I think these would both be very good options. Used or if you wait for deals, they can even be had for around $600.

They consistently get good reviews. I have a EDMR that is on loan to a friend until his new scope comes in. Very good for the money. I ultimately went with the Weaver because I got a great deal and thought the 15x top end was nice over the 12x.

Honestly on the 223, if you want to learn how to use mil reticles with holds and dialing dope go with the 10x Super Sniper MIL/MIL.

For $300 they are a steal and you can get a good feel for tactical scopes.

That is what I learned on(well mine was MIL/MOA), and I feel like I learned a lot, and for cheap!

Just my .02, good luck.
