Rifle Scopes Scope ring inserts?

I really like the idea of the inserts on the Signature Zee rings, both for the protection of the scope as well as eliminating the need for lapping. This got me thinking...why don't all rings have some kind of thin "soft" material inside and avoid the metal to metal contact with the scope as well as provide greater holding power? Does anyone use some other liner material for their rings, for example, bicycle inner tube strips or painters tape? Are there any cons to using, say tape, on the inside of the rings (don't want the adhesive on the barrel of the scope)? I image that bicycle inner tube material may be too thick, but there must be some kind of other similar rubber than can be used. I doubt felt would be a good material, as it would absorb moisture and could cause rust, but I don't see the same problem with, say rubber, or electricians tape.

Or, is this just a stupid newbie thought from someone that has never shot with a scope, because any insert would just put uneven stress on the scope tube?

Thoughts or experiences?

Honestly, buy quality rings and you will not have an issue.

painters tape or masking tape is .003 thick, wrapping it around the scope will change the tube OD and in short can become a pain in the ass, as tape compresses as does rubber. Recoil, hand pressure, bumping the scope can have you chasing zero forever.

I understand the premise behind the Zee rings, as you can change the cant of the scope, but for precision it is best to purchase a good base/bases, bed them, and the best best rings you can afford.
Once you have your optics torqued, and zeroed, leave it alone.

You do not have to spend a lot, as Warne makes quality gear. If you look in the Nightforce operators manual, Warne is a suggested company if Nightforce rings and bases are not available.
