Alright guys I have 600.00 bucks that I can use for a scope...(I dont have the option to buy big and then ask for forgiveness from the wife haha) I have been reading all of your reviews, but one more wouldn't hurt just so I feel really good about my choice. It will be going on Rem700 .308, that I would like to take out to about 1000yds. It will be dual purpose for range and hunting. I want mil/mil FFP, with mil-dot ret, illumination isnt really a big deal. Fixed power is not an option. You guys are the guru's, I know you guys answer these questions constantly, but it would be greatly appreciated.

a 3x9 is REAL tuff to use and discern targets at 1000yd...don't fucking kid yourself...its real tuff, then if you hunt....a 3x9 is good for 200-300yd...once again you will need an eyeball stretcher ...
AND why is it every newbie needs the latest go fast high speed gucci gear offered up when most don't got the wind doping skills to EVEN consider what it takes to throw bullets with any amount of success.....YES take the classes for sure....but i'm here to tell you many of trophy and high placement has been scored with some very dated lower end beginner glass...
the learning curve do not start with monetary limits on glass

Well I know that a 3x9 will be selling myself short, so I would need a little more magnification, maybe up to 14-16x. And I may not be as proficient a shooter as many on this site. But I can do my range math and hit a target further than 300 yds away. Since I have been on this site, I have done my homework and practiced. I just dont have a tac scope of my own right now, just a burris hunting scope. Its not about the high speed gucci gear, its about I saved money and I want to get the absolute best for my money. Thanks for the encouraging words though boltripper, I understand that many noobs want "tacticool" rather than functionality.

I have hunted for years with some form of 3-9x40 scope or 3-9x32 because that was what was given to me.
For the money go for the package deal from SWFA on the 3-9x40 SWFA SS. It fits your budget, and aside from not pissing off your OL(I piss off Panty 6 regularly and in high style) is about the best entry stuff in a package available.
I DO agree with Boltripper on the learning curve too. Having been the guy who spent good change on junk only to have it break, malfunction, not work, and buy the good stuff later on I know what it is to find the happy medium of eating raman and not pissing off Panty 6 with US Optics scopes and McMillan Stocks(oh yeah, that was FUN! She busted my balls for years over that stuff)

The FFP requirement is gonna put you over $600 unless you go with the Super Sniper, which you have already decided against. If FFP is not a must then I suggest this scope:

The Vortex is a good scope, like others have suggested. The FFP is a great class, but pricey for optics. You should be able to find a really good Vortex, Monarch,etc. In that range but not FFP.
Another choice I have seen is Millett. It is a lower end line, but one of our snipers has been trying one out as a demo, and he really has had good luck with it. He said its very practical and has held up great over the last 4 mos. He will have the scope for 2 more mos. Just food for thought.
