Rifle Scopes Scope Upgrade Dilemma

Currently my rifle has a Leupold Vari X-iii 3.5-10x with just a basic cross hair on it. I am happy with clarity of the scope but it is lacking a couple of features that I would like.

Putting a mil dot or TMR reticle in it is one I can fix pretty easy by sending it back to the custom shop.

The other feature is some sort of parallax adjustment. This scope has none. There's only one way around that, a new scope.

I'm still a beginner so I've been concentrating on fundamentals and tightening my groups up before I start slinging lead way down range. From what I've gathered, having that parallax adjustment will take some user error out of the equation.

Those are my "needs". My "want" is a scope with an illuminated reticle but I understand that is a want and likely will never "need" that feature. For the money I'm likely to have to spend, I might as well get it too though.

Another problem is budget. To get that kind of package typically costs over $1000 and we're talking a Mark 4, NF or something of that caliber. I just don't have that kind of cash to spend for the foreseeable future.

Here is where the dilemma kicks in. I could go with something like a Millet or Falcon Menace but I strongly suspect that the optical quality will be a step down from my leupold. Anything over $800 and I might as well save longer for the Night Force.

Are there any scopes out there that will be as good or better than the vari-x iii in terms of optical quality, have a parallax adjustment (side focus would be even better) and a mildot reticle in the sub $800 range? From the scouring of the internet I've done, I'm not sure it exists. Either I'm going to sacrifice optical quality or some features.

This feels like the good, fast and cheap problem. Pick two.

Should I just upgrade the reticle for now and then save up for a big boy scope?

I am extremely happy with the optical quality of the Falcon Menace, especially considering its low cost. I have a few other small issues with the scopes (tight focus ring, turret clicks are vague) but they are a good value.

A few years back, I was running S&B, USO, and NF on every rifle in the stable, not these days, so I reluctantly settled on a Falcon Menace just to give it a try. Cheap and inexpensive are not the same.

I'm running one of these scopes atop a new, bone stock Savage LRH in 6.5x284. The scope allowed me to put together a 3/4" group at 200yds and 1.75" group at 300yds. with Nosler Custom factory 130gr Accubond ammo. Granted, the rifle is crazy accurate when you consider it is a factory rifle running factory ammo & the dude behind the trigger doesn't get much trigger time these days. BUT you have to have a scope that resolves nicely to be able to accurately hold on a paper target at these distances.

I'd rate the glass as at least equal to VX-III quality & certainly better than any Millet or Falcon I've ever owned or used (owned 2 of each, sold them). The tracking is accurate & I like the easily resettable turrets.

Bottom line is it is a LOT of scope for the money & fits your wish list mentioned above.

Best of luck to you.

Re: Scope Upgrade Dilemma

I looked through one of rw snyder's falcons at the gun show this weekend and was pretty impressed with it. Other than the cross hairs being a little thick at full power its a pretty good choice. The price on it was $375.

Re: Scope Upgrade Dilemma

It took me about 5 months of looking but I found a like new Burris XTR 3X12-50 for alot less than new. It came off of another site's classifieds. I'm impressed so far with it. I run other Burris scopes also.

Re: Scope Upgrade Dilemma

Or, do what I am doing. Sell off other guns to get the scope of your dreams.

Whatever you do, don't settle for less. Otherwise you will end up living a lie saying things like "my {insert brand/model you settled on} is just as good as the nightforce, or whichever scope you originally wanted.

Re: Scope Upgrade Dilemma

+1 for sticking with the Leupold IF you see it possible sometime in the near future to be able to afford the Nightforce. If not, look into the Burris line, then offer mil-dot scopes that are very good and in your price range. I don't own one but my girlfriends Dad has 2 Burris's and they shoot lights out. Has one on a 300WSM and it holds zero perfectly. I use a Nikon Monarch, but you are looking for mil-dot reticle.
