Scopes and slings

For my long rifles I use (without exception) Night Force scopes with a Mildot reticle. I have learned that the replacement scope being offered to my unit is a Schmidt and Bender scope and I am unsure of the reticle. I have also learned that it is a first focal plane scope which is a mistake I believe and will probably have agreement from anyone who has had to lead and adjust for wind on a closer fast moving target. Anyone with experience with a Schmidt and Bender I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Please limit responses to Special Operations/Marine/Experienced military snipers.

I am also looking for a weapon sling that splits into a backpack for quick raid operations. I am familiar with the eberelstock and similar configurations and I am uninterested in these. I want to have the functionality of a sling and be able to wear it hands free so that I can manipulate another weapon. I have looked at the Accuracy International biathlon sling and the Vero Vellini backpack sling. Any serious suggestions from the above mentioned personnel would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Scopes and slings

I think you're mistaken about not liking the first focal plane. It's only with a FFP scope that the mils work in any power. So when your'e having to hold lead on a close fast moving target all you have to do is dial down the power and use the same hold you've always held.

I'm not SF, USMC, or an experience military sniper, but I have used a scope pretty extensively for the last few years. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a short time ago. Does that make me qualified to provide information?

Also, on your quest for a sling to sling your rifle like a back pack we offer three different types. Please see the links below.

If you have any questions about your scope or the slings I'm sure someone here will be more than happy to help out.

Thank you for your service.

Re: Scopes and slings

I also disagree about the whole not liking FFP thing. FFP allows for hold overs, hold off, and ranging at any magnification and is a feature that I wished my scope had had in Afghanistan. The SFP/FFP debate has been beaten into the earth many many times but it says something when the USMC and Army start to transition to FFP optics for their rifles. In regards to Schmidt and Bender they are very durable and well made optics that are certainly capable of taking whatever abuse is thrown at them. I've seen a USMC M8541 that had the ocular sheered off and duct taped on and besides some dirt in the erector it still worked. Tracking and repeatability are also extremely good throughout the elevation and windage travel range. The S&B's are very, very good scopes so it's not exactly a step down.

Re: Scopes and slings

Holding on movers with an SFP scope won't work as you think it will - The reticule only matches reality on SFP scopes at a single setting, usually the highest magnification.

Unless I'm buying a red-dot, I try to stick with mil/mil FFP myself.

Re: Scopes and slings

I've been calling the Rifles Only Telephone # to order a sling for over a week now. Is there a better way to reach them. I would like to have a couple questions answered before I order. Thanks.
