Rifle Scopes Scopes and warranties for a 50 BMG?

    Well if my barrel ever gets out of this endless loop at USPS and makes it to RWS then I should have my 50 BMG built in a couple of months. With that in mind, I am starting to scope shop to find the best option for that gun.

    Currently I have two USO ER25 sitting in my safe and considered using one of those, but I am a little hesitant using a scope without a NO BS warranty like Vortex or SWFA. Looking at the 20-25 top end range. I have a 30mm Spuhr here right now so the AMG was top consideration, but I can sell/trade that for a 34mm so that's not an issue.

    So besides SWFA and Vortex, who would you recommend looking at for a 50 BMG scope?

    Why not use the USO? They will fix it if it breaks. Vortex "No-BS" warranty seems to get used more than any other warranty in the history of riflescopes. Is that a good thing?

    Have to agree. I wouldn't hesitate at all to use the USO. I also agree with the above about the Vortex warranty. It's nice to have, but it's better to never need it. I had to use it. Vortex was incredible about it, but it seems they have a lot of practice.
    I would personally go with something like a USO, a Nightforce, or a Schmidt & Bender. If you want a Vortex, I've always heard fantastic things about the Razor line. I believe the failure rate on them is VERY low.

    Yea I wanted to stay away from the Razor Gen II because I'm not a big fan of the color or the weight (not that weight any longer has significance on this build).

    Thought about just going with a rusty trusty Nightforce NXS F1 on here as well.

    I guess my hesitation with the USO is that they are ER25s, a discontinued model now. So far their service has been great for me, even after discontinuing the line, I just want to be certain that if a scope goes belly up for whatever reason, it is covered.

    Call USO and ask them. I'd be willing to bet that they will take care of your scope as long as they are in business.

    The word "seems" is key there. It doesn't in reality and especially in the Razor series he is looking at.

    OP make sure to keep an eye on the amount of internal elevation for that .50. Nice color is great but if you can't dial where you want to be then it doesn't help whatever the color of the scope is. ;)

    I would try the USO on the rifle as it should be fine. If you are worried call them and make sure it will be covered if you have an issue. I am sure it will be.

    Shot a text to the sales rep at USO and she said it would be covered and fixed no problem, even on the older series ER25. That's what I like to hear.

    Ive got one with the H37 reticle so having that 6 mil high center cross hair should help with really getting the range out of the 50.

    Perception is reality, I guess. I've had 2 vortex scopes, both failed and had to be sent back. Vortex was cool about it and replaced them both quickly, but they still failed under very little use. On one, the reticle "de-laminated" while in the safe not being used. I sold them both after they were replaced, and I won't get a 3rd. I also personally know several other people who have had to send Vortex scopes back. Between that and the countless internet stories about their warranty getting put to use, it's a little hard to ignore. I'll just look elsewhere next time I need a scope.

    Every brand has issues and if you looked at percentages the perception wouldn't be reality. There are many stories about people not having to send their scopes back as well. People are happy and post when they do as they are treated very well by Vortex unlike some companies where they have to fight with them or wait months to get their scope back. So yes you hear stories but as I mentioned plenty of stories of scopes not going back. Also you have to remember Vortex makes scopes from $199-2500 so there are many tiers of scopes.

    Not trying to talk you into a scope. Just trying to keep the discussion in context as to amounts out there and amounts going back. It's your money and I don't want you to do something you don't feel comfortable with doing as money is hard to come by and choices should be made by what is best for the end user.

    Not really any way for people to simply look into percentages as most all companies don't really put that info out there. If you know people in the business you can find them out. Another thing to think about is the number of scopes that go back with "issues" but are actually not found to have any. That number is actually higher than most think as well.

    IMO a NF NXS 8-32 or 5.5-22 is the perfect 50 scope. I don't use mine that often (so I can't justify $1400 being hardly used) so it has a Sightron SIII 6-24 LRMOA on it. Burris Sig XTR rings with the inserts allow me to use the bottom of the scope's travel as a zero stop. A friend has the same scope on his and we've had no issues.

    Yea I thought about going with something cheaper like that or the SWFA HD 5-20 since I already have one of those. Might do that, but the USO is really tempting me too when I get that back from USO.
