I recently bought the mossberg mvp-scout scope combo, which came with a Vortex 2-7X32 long eye releaf scope. Rifle barrel is a 16 inch medium heavy.

After shooting it and going hunting with it, I found I’m not a fan of the long eye releaf scope. I want to keep the spirit of the low magnification of a scout rifle though. Like a 1X10 magnification range on a regular eye releaf scope

Any cigjestions On scopes and what do you all think my best max distance should be for a 16 inch medium heavy barrel? Budget is around $500

What is the rifle chambered in.....223, 308, x39...?

Might look at swfa they have some lower mag scopes, variable and fixed. I am sure leupold has something.
I am a big fan of the Burris fullfield E1 scopes for a low cost optic. You didn't mention but illuminated reticle scopes
Are out there also.

Really like my Steiner P4Xi 1-4 but price keeps going up and there are a lot of options where it’s priced now. I think a similar LPVO would work well for you.

I put together a fun little package a while back for a review with a Remington Model 7 in .308 and a vortex SE 1-6.

It was handy up close on 1x and the 6x was plenty for the woods here in VA. I'd have to go back and look at my dope but i think the BDC was good to 400 or so. The newish 1-8 SE might be a good option for your rifle.

Like you, I prefer a normal scope on my Scout rifle; not just for the optical characteristics, but because positioning the scope so far forward makes for awkward weight/balance issues. I tried a 1-6x24 LPVO (Athlon Midas BTR) and while it's a great scope for day hunting, the limited light gathering ability of the small objective just didn't cut it at dawn and dusk. I ended up putting that on an AR.

When Camera Land offered the Burris Four X 1.5-6x42 at a steep discount last year I jumped at the opportunity and bought one. I always liked the Burris MTAC 1.5-6x42 (which is almost identical to the Four X) but the tactical reticles they offered just didn't appeal to me for hunting. The Four X comes with an illuminated German #4 reticle - perfect for what I want to do with my rifle. You might contact Doug at Camera Land and see if he has any left. It's a great little scope, and they were priced well within your budget. If he doesn't have that one anymore, ask him what else he's got that might work for you; he's a great guy to deal with.

As to max distance, I rarely see shots over 150 yards where I hunt, but people have taken elk past 400 yards with a .308 scout rifle. IMHO, that's about as far as you should go considering the ballistics of typical .308 hunting loads out of a shorter barrel. But, as always, it comes down to bullet placement and confidence in your ability to make a clean, ethical kill.

There's another thread in this subforum about the new Bushnell Forge 1-8x30. That looks like it might be closer to what you want. Street price appears to be around $400.00.
