I have this painting framed in my house. I have always wondered what he was thinking. Was it?
A. There is no way they will take this land.
B. If you build it, Ben ROFLburger will come.
C. What is the best pack for carrying stuff on my back?

I think he's not thinking at all. I'll go with the zen answer, he's fully accustomed to just being, and doesn't suffer our modern disease of disjointedly overthinking everything we encounter.

Or I may be totally off and he's considering what camo color to paint his handmade satchel there to blend in better with the surroundings.
I'm wagering he'll settle on multicam.

Fort Dukane(ph)? (there is a French spelling that eludes me at the moment hence phonetics)

Also (as Doc said) , it looks (from what I can tell from the section of the painting), that he is looking down on Fort Duquesne. Is the former Fort Pitt visible more to the right out of the picture frame?
There are very few Star Forts built in the US, even fewer standing today. Castillo De San Marcos is a wonderful example of their construction- especially given the material it was constructed from (coquina)

The answer is B. He’s sitting in a tree on the corner of Merrimac and P.J. McArdle Roadway looking across the Monongahela River down into Heinz Field. He’s thinking the Raider’s are going to beat them in the AFC Championship this year.
