I'm looking for a gunsmith that can do a rockwell hardness test on an action for me. If you can or you know one please let me know I've already contacted about 6 companies and have gotten no where granted 2 of the companies havent responded yet.

I have the inspection equipment for this, but as Dave suggested, you might just source the service locally.

The bigger issue here is whether or not the action is heat treated on all the features. A lot of production actions are induction hardened in the lugs and maybe the Primary Extraction cam.

Trying to test these two spots isn't exactly easy to do just because of positioning and ease of access.

Bouncing a stylus off a thin walled cylinder isn't the best path either. Coupons should really be setup so that natural deflection is avoided. A tube that yields a .0005 or .001 will skew the results quite a bit. Standing it on edge is always better when possible.

Least that's been my experience.

Good luck.

C.
