hey all, i took some pics of my groupings from this weekend. as some of you know this is my first rifle, its a savage 111 FC in .270 win. and this was my second time shooting a scoped gun... i have a long way to go.

and i wanted to put 4 shots on one target, but i only had 3 left in the pack. next time ill be sure to do it. these pics are a bit misleading, in a 4 shot clip, i only had groups touching two or three times.

Re: second time at the range

I would say, good for a first timer.. Read up on some fundamentals and slow down.. 5 shots per group.. NO time limit.. Are you shooting Standing? Prone? Bench.. Just read and slow down//.. I bet next time is way better.

Re: second time at the range

bench, with a harris bipod. i did shoot standing, at an old target somebody had left up, nothing worth taking a picture of, but i figure if shit hits the fan, i wont have a nice bench to shoot on....

thanks for checking it out.

Re: second time at the range

well done, good stuff but get off the bench and get prone to start with or you'll never move out beyond 100 yrds. bench is really only for load development. well done again

Re: second time at the range

not a bad looking pattern.

Probably not going to get better than that with hunting ammo, and thats all you are going to find with 270, its not considrered a precision round and I dont think youll get any match quality ammo.

Start rolling your own. You'll squeeze them groups down just fine. And don't let the nay-sayers steer you wrong...if you don't want to dive right into handloading with 200 bucks worth of equipment plus expendables, a Lee Loader Classic, a block of 2x4 and a hard rubber mallet will get you started. I started there and quickly whittled my group sizes down. Thanks to some very generous folks on this board all my equipment has been updated and I now load .308 on a hand lee press and the consistency of my ammo has gotten better overall, but for loading hunting ammo for a .270, you can't go wrong with loading your own.

These groups (and a few more like 'em) were loaded with a Lee Loader Classic...

Re: second time at the range

Dude 270 is a very accurate round ! we had a 1k comp bout a year ago and out of 50 shooters including a magnum class with 338LM and 50 cals the 270 won !!!
