I dont disgree that they've done hard work and turned a desert into a thriving metropolis. I got that. And in the middle of their enemies. But if you leave the religious implications out, they had no real right to the land and displaced a lot of people, who now justifiably hate them. The Brits had land everywhere, they could have gone ANYWHERE, but they chose a place in the middle of people who hate them. How fucking bright is that?

Ancient ancestral and religious ties to a physical place based on traditions passed down through many generations often override many other considerations, when it comes down to it, that is what a lot of the world is based on.
(Just like why the "refugees" don't just ask Israel to buy them out and all go live in villas in the south of France).
However just about anywhere they landed at that time they would have had to fight it out with somebody as the world was pretty well carved up by then and there really wasn't any "empty land" that some state didn't lay claim to.
It would have been pick who you want to fight, Arabs, Africans, Asians, islanders etc.
Where would you suggest they have gone?
That being said, if I was planning it without the religious / ancestral ties at that time, I probably would have picked somewhere in Africa to drive out all the tribesmen and set up the new state, an area much richer in resources.
They killed everything because it was infested with "off world" DNA. Original DNA was needed for the Head Honcho's plan. If those people that were killed and their ways weren't done away with we'd likely be living with things like menotaurs, satyrs, and other freaks of nature right now.
