Suppressors Selling Suppressor in MT

Don't know about anything state specific, but I'm pretty sure you'll have to go through an FFL/SOT (Class 3) dealer to sell it. Find a reputable dealer that sells suppressors, and then talk to them.

I'm sure there's some other legal ways to do it, but letting a dealer handle the transfer will make life a lot simpler for you.

If it's currently on a Form 4: you need to Form 4 it to an FFL/SOT in the buyer's state;, then he Form 4's it from them to him. Yes, two stamps.

Alternatively, if the seller is a resident of your state, I believe you can still Form 4 it directly to him. However, I am not sure how this works now with the 41F changes, trusts, and the eFile changes. It used to be you'd just both sign the paper form and send it off. This is one stamp.

How has the e file stuff effected wait times on purchasing new cans?

As Zak stated - in state - you can Form 4 it directly to the buyer ( $200 ) . Out of state - it must be Form 4'd to a dealer ( $200 ) , who once the Form 4 is approved, may Form 4 it to the end buyer ( another $200 ).

E-file went into effect late December 2021 - so if their stated turn around time of 90 days is accurate - we will find out later this month ( March ). Keep yer fingers crossed. 🤞

90 days would be amazing

You can sell directly to another individual in State. I did this several times when I was a Montana resident.
One Form 4 transfer. $200 tax paid.

Do not involve an SOT for an in-State transfer. That would require a transfer to the dealer and then a second transfer to the buyer, doubling the taxes owed and the wait time.

If selling out of State, then the can has to be transferred to an SOT in the buyer’s State, then transferred to the buyer. Probably not worth the effort.

You should have no trouble finding a buyer in MT.
